In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

Read! (O Prophet) in the name of your Lord Who created — He created man from a clot of congealed blood. Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, Who taught by the pen, taught man what he did not know.
Nay, indeed man transgresses because he sees himself self-sufficient — (whereas) surely to your Lord is the return. Have you seen the one who forbids a servant (of Allah) when he prays? Have you considered: what if he (the servant) is upon guidance, or enjoins righteousness? Have you considered: what if he (the one who forbids) denies (the truth) and turns away? Does he not know that Allah sees? Nay, if he does not desist, We will surely seize him by the forelock — a lying, sinful forelock. Then let him call his clan; We too shall call the angels of punishment. Nay, do not obey him; rather, prostrate and draw near (to your Lord). ؏١ — Sajdah (prostration required here)
Name:
The word “Alaq” in the second verse has been designated as the name of this surah.
Period of Revelation:
This surah has two parts. The first part begins with “Iqra” and ends at the fifth verse with the words “ma lam ya’lam.” The second part begins with “Kalla innal-insana la-yatgha” and continues to the end of the surah. Regarding the first part, the overwhelming majority of the scholars of the Ummah agree that this is the very first revelation sent down upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. In this matter, the hadith of Hazrat Ayesha (RA), narrated through numerous chains by Imam Ahmad, Bukhari, Muslim, and other scholars of hadith, is counted among the most authentic hadiths, and in it Hazrat Ayesha (RA) herself relates the entire account of the beginning of revelation as she heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Besides this, it is also reported from Ibn Abbas, Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, and a group of the Companions (RA) that the very first verses of the Qur’an revealed to the Prophet ﷺ were these. The second part was revealed later, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began praying in the Haram according to the Islamic method, and Abu Jahl tried to stop him from it through threats.
The Beginning of Revelation:
The scholars of hadith narrate the account of the beginning of revelation, each through their own chains, from Imam Zuhri, who narrated from Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair, who narrated from his aunt Hazrat Ayesha (RA). She says that revelation began upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the form of true (and in some narrations, good) dreams. Whatever dream he saw would come true exactly as if he had seen it in broad daylight. Then he became inclined to solitude, and would spend many days and nights in the cave of Hira engaged in worship. (Hazrat Ayesha used the word “tahannuth,” which Imam Zuhri explains as meaning “ta’abbud,” worship — this was a form of devotion he practiced, since at that time he had not yet been shown by Allah the prescribed manner of worship.) He would take provisions of food and drink from home and spend several days there, then return to Hazrat Khadijah (RA), who would provide further provisions for more days. One day, while he was in the cave of Hira, revelation suddenly descended upon him, and the angel came to him and said, “Read!” Hazrat Ayesha herself then narrates the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “I said, ‘I am not one who reads.’” At this the angel seized me and pressed me until my strength gave way. Then he released me and said, “Read!” I said, “I am not one who reads.” He pressed me again until my strength gave way. Then he released me and said, “Read!” I again said, “I am not one who reads.” He pressed me a third time until my strength gave way. Then he released me and said, “Iqra bismi Rabbika alladhi khalaq” (Read in the name of your Lord Who created), until he reached “ma lam ya’lam” (what he did not know). Hazrat Ayesha (RA) says that after this, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned trembling and shaking, and reaching Hazrat Khadijah said, “Cover me, cover me!” So he was covered. When the state of fear had passed, he said, “O Khadijah, what has happened to me?” Then he related the whole account to her and said, “I fear for my life.” She said, “Never! Be of good cheer. By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You are good to your relatives, you speak the truth” (in one narration it adds, “you fulfill trusts”), “you bear the burdens of the helpless, you provide for the poor through your earnings, you are hospitable to guests, and you assist in good deeds.” Then she took him to Waraqah bin Nawfal, her cousin, who had become a Christian in the pre-Islamic era, who wrote the Gospel in Arabic and Hebrew, and who had grown very old and blind. Hazrat Khadijah said to him, “O cousin, listen to what your nephew has to say.” Waraqah asked the Prophet, “Nephew, what did you see?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ described what he had witnessed. Waraqah said, “This is the same Namus (the angel who brings revelation) that was sent down upon Musa (peace be upon him). I wish I could be a strong young man in the time of your prophethood. I wish I could be alive when your people expel you.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Will the people expel me?” Waraqah said, “Yes. Never has a man come with what you have brought without being met with hostility. If I live to see that day, I will support you with all my strength.” But not long after, Waraqah passed away.
This account itself testifies that, up until the very moment before the angel’s arrival, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had no thought whatsoever that he was to be made a prophet. Far from seeking or expecting such a thing, it had never even crossed his mind that such a matter would befall him. The descent of revelation and the angel’s appearance came as a sudden event for him, and its effect upon him was naturally what such a tremendous event would have upon any unsuspecting person. This is why, when he rose to call people to Islam, the people of Makkah raised every kind of objection against him, yet not one of them ever said, “We already suspected this — you had long been preparing yourself to make some such claim of prophethood.” This account also tells us how pure his life was before prophethood, and how elevated his character was. Hazrat Khadijah (RA) was not a young or inexperienced woman — at the time of this event she was 55 years old, and had been his life companion for fifteen years. No weakness of a husband can remain hidden from a wife. In this long married life she had found him to be a person of such exalted character that when he related to her what had happened in the cave of Hira, she accepted without hesitation that it was indeed Allah’s angel who had brought him revelation. Likewise, Waraqah bin Nawfal was an elderly resident of Makkah who had observed the Prophet’s life since his childhood, and due to fifteen years of close kinship had an even deeper familiarity with his circumstances. When he too heard this account, he did not regard it as any delusion, but immediately said that this was the same Namus that had descended upon Musa (peace be upon him). This means that, in his view too, the Prophet ﷺ was a person of such elevated standing that his being raised to the rank of prophethood was nothing to be astonished at.
The Occasion of Revelation of the Second Part:
The second part of this surah was revealed when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began praying in the Haram according to the Islamic method, and Abu Jahl tried to frighten and threaten him to stop him from it. It appears that after becoming a prophet, before he openly preached Islam, he began performing prayer in the Haram in the manner that Allah had taught him, and this was the very thing that first made the Quraish feel that he had become a follower of some new religion. Other people merely watched this with astonishment, but the vein of ignorant pride in Abu Jahl was stirred, and he began threatening him not to worship in this manner in the Haram. Several hadiths are narrated in this connection from Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas and Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA), mentioning these acts of insolence by Abu Jahl. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) relates that Abu Jahl asked the people of Quraish, “Does Muhammad (ﷺ) place his face on the ground in front of you?” They said, “Yes.” He said, “By Lat and Uzza, if I see him praying like this, I will put my foot on his neck and grind his face into the ground.” Then it happened that, seeing the Prophet ﷺ praying, he advanced to place his foot on his neck, but suddenly people saw him stepping back and trying to shield his face from something. He was asked what had happened to him. He said, “Between him and me there was a trench of fire, and a terrifying thing, and wings.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Had he come near me, the angels would have torn him to pieces.”
It is related from Ibn Abbas (RA) that Abu Jahl said that if he saw Muhammad (ﷺ) praying near the Ka’bah, he would press his neck under his foot. When the Prophet ﷺ was informed of this, he said that if he did so, the angels would seize him openly.
Another narration from Ibn Abbas (RA) states that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying at the Station of Ibrahim. Abu Jahl passed by and said, “O Muhammad, did I not forbid you from this?” and began threatening him. In response, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rebuked him sternly. At this Abu Jahl said, “O Muhammad, on what strength do you threaten me? By Allah, I have the most supporters in this valley.”
It was in connection with these very events that the part of the surah beginning with “Kalla innal-insana la-yatgha” was revealed. Naturally, this part’s position should be exactly where it has been placed in this surah of the Qur’an, since after the very first revelation, the Prophet’s ﷺ earliest manifestation of Islam was through prayer itself, and his confrontation with the disbelievers also began with this very incident.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

We sent this (Qur’an) down in the Night of Power. And what do you know what the Night of Power is? The Night of Power is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend in it, by the permission of their Lord, with every command. That night is peace, entirely, until the break of dawn.
Name:
The word al-Qadr in the very first verse has been taken as the name of this surah.
Period of Revelation:
There is disagreement over whether it is Makkan or Madinan. Abu Hayyan claimed in Al-Bahr al-Muhit that most scholars consider it Madinan. Ali ibn Ahmad al-Wahidi states in his tafsir that this was the first surah revealed in Madinah. In contrast, Al-Mawardi says that most scholars hold it to be Makkan, and Imam Suyuti recorded the same view in Al-Itqan. Ibn Mardawayh transmitted a report from Ibn Abbas, Ibn al-Zubayr, and Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with them) that this surah was revealed in Makkah. Reflection on the subject matter of the surah also suggests that it should have been revealed in Makkah.
Subject and Theme:
Its theme is to make people aware of the worth, value, and importance of the Qur’an. Its placement right after Surah Al-Alaq in the order of the Qur’an itself indicates that this surah tells people about the night of destiny in which the revelation of that sacred Book — whose revelation began with the first five verses of Surah Al-Alaq — descended. What a magnificent Book it is, and what its revelation truly means.
First, Allah states that We sent it down — meaning this is not Muhammad (peace be upon him)’s own composition, but rather We are the One who revealed it. He then states that its revelation from Us took place in the Night of Power. “Night of Power” carries two meanings, and both are intended here. One is that this is the night in which destinies are decreed — in other words, this is no ordinary night like other nights, but the night in which fortunes are made and unmade. In this sense, the revelation of this Book is not merely the sending down of a book; rather, it is something that would change the destiny not only of the Quraysh, not only of the Arabs, but of the entire world. The same point is made in Surah Ad-Dukhan as well.
The second meaning is that this is a night of great honor, dignity, and distinction, and it is better than a thousand months. Through this, the disbelievers of Makkah are, in effect, being warned: in your ignorance you regard this Book brought by Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a calamity upon yourselves, cursing it as some affliction that has befallen you — whereas the night on which its revelation was decreed was so full of goodness and blessing that never in a thousand months of human history had anything been done for the good of mankind comparable to what was accomplished on that night. This same point is expressed in a different way in verse 3 of Surah Ad-Dukhan (see Surah Ad-Dukhan).
Finally, it is stated that on this night the angels and Gabriel descend, by the permission of their Lord, with every command (referred to in Surah Ad-Dukhan, verse 4, as “every wise command”), and that it is a night of complete peace from evening until morning — meaning no evil has any part in it, because all of Allah’s decrees are ultimately for good; no evil is ever intended in them. Even when a decree is made to destroy a people, it is for the sake of good, not for the sake of evil.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Those who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists were not going to desist (from their disbelief) until there came to them a clear proof — (that is) a Messenger from Allah, reciting pure scriptures in which were written entirely upright and true writings.
Those who were given the Book before did not become divided except after clear explanation (of the right path) had come to them. And they were commanded nothing except that they worship Allah, making their faith sincerely His, turning away from all else exclusively to Him, and that they establish prayer and give zakah. That is the perfectly correct and true religion.
Those who disbelieved among the People of the Book and the polytheists will surely go into the fire of Hell, and they will abide therein forever; they are the worst of created beings. Those who believed and did righteous deeds are surely the best of created beings. Their reward with their Lord is everlasting Gardens beneath which rivers flow; they will abide therein forever and ever. Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. This is for the one who feared his Lord.
Name:
The word “al-Bayyinah” from the first verse has been designated as the name of this surah.
Period of Revelation:
There is a difference of opinion regarding whether it is Makkan or Madinan. Some commentators say that, according to the majority, it is Makkan, while others say that, according to the majority, it is Madinan. It is the opinion of Ibn al-Zubayr and Ata’ ibn Yasar that it is Madinan. Two opinions are reported from Ibn Abbas and Qatadah — one that it is Makkan, and the other that it is Madinan. Hazrat Ayesha (may Allah be pleased with her) considers it Makkan. Abu Hayyan, author of Bahr al-Muhit, and Abd al-Mun’im ibn al-Firas, author of Ahkam al-Qur’an, give preference to it being Makkan. As far as its content is concerned, no indication is found in it that points toward either its Makkan or Madinan origin.
Subject and Theme:
Its placement in the order of the Qur’an, after Surah Al-Alaq and Surah Al-Qadr, is highly meaningful. Surah Al-Alaq records the first revelation. Surah Al-Qadr tells us when it was revealed. And this surah tells us why it was necessary to send a Messenger along with this pure Book. First, the necessity of sending a Messenger is explained: the people of the world — whether from among the People of the Book or the polytheists — could not emerge from the disbelief in which they were caught without a Messenger being sent whose very existence would itself be a clear proof of his prophethood, and who would present to the people the Book of God in its original and correct form, purified of all the corruptions with which previous heavenly books had been adulterated, and consisting of entirely upright and true teachings. After this, the misguidance of the People of the Book is clarified: the reason they strayed onto various different paths was not that Allah had failed to guide them, but rather that they strayed after a clear explanation of the right path had already come to them. From this it automatically follows that they themselves are responsible for their own misguidance, and now, after this clear explanation has come to them again through this Messenger of Allah, if they continue to stray, their responsibility will become even greater. In this connection it is explained that whatever prophets came from Allah, and whatever books were sent, they commanded nothing except that, abandoning all other ways, the way of worshiping Allah alone be adopted, that no one else’s worship, obedience, or veneration be associated with Him, that prayer be established, and that zakah be paid — this alone has always been the one true religion. From this too it automatically follows that whatever new things the People of the Book have added to their religions, departing from this original religion, are all false, and that this Messenger of Allah who has now come is inviting them back to this very original religion. Finally, it is stated plainly that those among the People of the Book and the polytheists who refuse to accept this Messenger are the worst of created beings, and their punishment is eternal Hell; and those who believe, adopt the way of righteous deeds, and live their lives in the world in fear of God are the best of created beings, and their reward is that they will dwell in Paradise forever — Allah is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Allah.

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.

When the earth is shaken with its full intensity, and the earth throws out from within it all its burdens, and man will say, “What is happening to it?” — on that Day it will narrate its accounts, for your Lord will have commanded it [to do so]. On that Day, people will return in scattered groups so that they may be shown their deeds. Then whoever has done good equal to the weight of a speck of dust will see it, and whoever has done evil equal to the weight of a speck of dust will see it. — End of section (1)
Name:
It is derived from the word zilzaalaha (its earthquake) in the first verse.
Period of Revelation:
There is a difference of opinion regarding whether it is Makkan or Madinan. Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), Ata, Jabir, and Mujahid say it is Makkan, and one report from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) also supports this. Against this, Qatadah and Muqatil say it is Madinan, and another report from Ibn Abbas also supports it being Madinan.
The argument for it being Madinan rests on a narration that Ibn Abi Hatim related from Abu Sa’id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him). He said that when the verse “Whoever does good equal to the weight of a speck will see it, and whoever does evil equal to the weight of a speck will see it” was revealed, he asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will I see my deeds?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Yes.” He asked, “Even the major sins?” The Prophet said, “Yes.” He asked, “And even the minor sins?” The Prophet said, “Yes.” Abu Sa’id then said, “Then I am doomed!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) responded, “Be glad, O Abu Sa’id, for every good deed will be equal to ten good deeds like it.”
The basis for using this hadith to argue for the surah being Madinan is that Abu Sa’id al-Khudri was a resident of Madinah and reached the age of maturity after the Battle of Uhud. So if this surah was revealed in his presence, as his statement suggests, it would have to be Madinan.
However, the method that the Companions and the Tabi’in followed regarding the occasions of revelation of verses and surahs — an explanation of which has already been given in the discussion of Surah Ad-Dahr — means that a Companion’s statement that “this verse was revealed on such-and-such occasion” is not conclusive proof that its revelation actually occurred at that time. It is possible that when Abu Sa’id, after reaching an age of understanding, first heard this surah recited from the blessed tongue of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he became apprehensive at its final portion and asked the Prophet the questions mentioned above — and that he later narrated this event by saying, “When this verse was revealed, I said to the Prophet…”
Were it not for this narration, anyone reading the Quran with understanding would feel that this is a Makkan surah. In fact, from its content and style of expression, one would feel that it was revealed in that very early period of Makkah when the fundamental beliefs of Islam were being presented to people in an extremely concise and deeply moving manner.
Subject and Theme:
Its subject is the second life after death, and the complete unveiling, in that life, of the full record of all the deeds a person did in this world. First, in three brief statements, it is explained how the second life after death will come about and how astonishing it will be for man. Then, in two sentences, it is stated that this very earth — on which man has carelessly committed every kind of deed, and about which it never even occurred to him that this lifeless thing would one day testify to his actions — will, on that Day, speak by Allah’s command and will declare, regarding every single human being, what deed he did, where, and at what time. After this, it is stated that on that Day, people will emerge from their graves from every corner of the earth, in separate groups, so that they may be shown their deeds — and this presentation of deeds will be so complete and detailed that not even a speck’s weight of good or evil will remain unrevealed.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
By the snorting steeds that run, then strike sparks of fire (with their hooves), then launch their raid at dawn, then raise clouds of dust in this rush, then plunge into the midst of a host. Indeed, man is most ungrateful to his Lord — and he himself bears witness to this — and indeed, he is fiercely engrossed in the love of wealth. Does he not know that when what lies in the graves is brought forth, and what lies hidden in the breasts is disclosed, that Day their Lord will surely have full knowledge of them?

Name:
The surah takes its name from the first word, Al-’Ādiyāt. There is disagreement over whether it was revealed in Makkah or Madinah. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Jabir, Hasan al-Basri, Ikrimah, and Ata’ hold that it is Makkan. Anas ibn Malik and Qatadah say it is Madinan, while two opinions are reported from Ibn Abbas — one that it is Makkan, the other that it is Madinan. However, the subject matter and style of the surah clearly indicate that it is not only Makkan but belongs to the earliest period of revelation in Makkah.
Subject and Theme:
The purpose of the surah is to make people understand the moral degradation into which man falls when he denies or becomes heedless of the Hereafter, and at the same time to warn people that in the Hereafter not only their outward deeds but even the secrets hidden in their hearts will be examined. To make this point, the surah invokes the widespread lawlessness in Arabia at the time, which had exhausted the whole land — bloodshed everywhere, plunder thriving, tribe raiding tribe, with no one able to spend a night in peace, since at any moment an enemy might fall upon their settlement at dawn. This was a condition known to all Arabs, who felt its ugliness; though the one being plundered mourned it and the plunderer rejoiced in it, when misfortune eventually struck the plunderer himself, he too would recognize what a wretched state they were all caught up in.
By pointing to this situation, the surah explains that, being unaware of the second life after death and of accountability before God in it, man has become ungrateful to his Lord — using the faculties God gave him for oppression and plunder, blinded by the love of wealth, striving to acquire it by any means however impure or vile, his very condition testifying that he misuses the powers granted by his Lord and thereby shows ingratitude. He would never persist in this conduct if he knew of the time when he must rise alive from the graves, and when the very intentions and purposes hidden in hearts — which drove him to his various deeds in the world — will be drawn out and laid bare. On that Day, the Lord of mankind will know fully well who has done what, and what treatment each deserves.

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful

The great calamity! What is that great calamity? And what do you know what that great calamity is? The day when people will be like scattered moths, and the mountains will be like dyed wool, carded and flying about. Then whoever’s scale is heavy will be in pleasant bliss, and whoever’s scale is light, his abode will be a deep pit. And what do you know what that is? A blazing fire.

Name:
The very first word, Al-Qari’ah, has been given as the title of this surah. This is not merely a name but also the heading of its subject matter, since the entire surah speaks of the Day of Judgment. There is no disagreement that it was revealed in Makkah; in fact, its content indicates that this too belongs to the surahs revealed in the early period at Makkah al-Mu’azzamah.
Theme and Subject Matter:
Its theme is the Hereafter and the Day of Resurrection. People are first startled with the words: The great calamity! What is that great calamity? And what do you know what that great calamity is? After preparing the listeners in this way to hear news of some dreadful event, a picture of the Day of Judgment is presented to them in just two sentences: that on that day people, overcome with panic, will run about in every direction the way scattered moths flutter around a light, and the mountains will be uprooted from their places, their cohesion will give way, and they will be reduced to something like carded wool. It is then explained that in the Hereafter, when Allah’s court is established to take account of people, the judgment will rest on this basis: whose good deeds outweigh his bad deeds, and whose good deeds are lighter in weight than his bad deeds. The first kind of people will be granted that bliss which will please them, while the second kind will be cast into that deep pit which will be filled with fire.

The craze of seeking more and more, and outdoing one another in worldly gain, has kept you heedless until ⟨in this very pursuit⟩ you reach the edge of the grave. Nay! Soon you will come to know. Then ⟨hear this again:⟩ Nay! Soon you will come to know. Nay! Had you known ⟨the outcome of this conduct⟩ with certain knowledge, ⟨you would not have behaved this way⟩. You shall surely see Hell. Then ⟨hear this:⟩ you shall see it with the certainty of direct sight. Then, on that Day, you will surely be questioned about these bounties. ﴾Section 1﴿
Name
The word At-Takathur from the first verse has been taken as the name of this surah.
Period of Revelation
Abu Hayyan and Shawkani state that, according to all commentators, this is a Makki surah, and Imam Suyuti’s view is that the most well-known opinion is that it is Makki. However, some reports have led some to call it Madani. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated, on the authority of Abu Buraidah (may Allah be pleased with him), that this surah was revealed concerning two Ansari tribes, Banu Harithah and Banu al-Harith. The two tribes first boasted to one another about the number of their living men, then went to the graveyard and boasted about their dead as well. At that point the divine words “Alhakumut-takathur” were revealed. But if one keeps in view the method the Companions and the Tabi’in followed regarding the “occasions of revelation,” this report is not actually evidence that the surah was revealed on that very occasion — rather, it means that the surah’s content fittingly applies to that incident.
Imam Bukhari and Ibn Jarir have recorded a statement from Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allah be pleased with him) that they used to consider the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) saying — that if a son of Adam had a valley full of wealth, he would still long for a third valley, and that nothing but dust can fill the belly of the son of Adam — to be part of the Qur’an, until “Alhakumut-takathur” was revealed. This hadith has been cited as evidence that Surah At-Takathur is Madani, on the grounds that Ubayy accepted Islam in Madinah. But Ubayy’s statement does not make clear in what sense the Companions considered the Prophet’s saying to be “from the Qur’an.” If it means they thought it was literally a verse of the Qur’an, that is not credible, because the vast majority of the Companions were thoroughly familiar with every letter of the Qur’an — how could they have mistaken a hadith for a Qur’anic verse? And if “being from the Qur’an” is taken to mean “derived from the Qur’an,” then the report could equally mean that when the Companions who entered Islam in Madinah first heard this surah recited by the Prophet, they assumed it had just been revealed, and then thought that his above-mentioned saying was derived from this very surah.
Ibn Jarir, Tirmidhi, Ibn al-Mundhir and other scholars of hadith have recorded a statement of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that they remained in doubt about the punishment of the grave until “Alhakumut-takathur” was revealed. This has been taken as evidence that the surah is Madani, on the grounds that the punishment of the grave was mentioned only in Madinah, not in Makkah. But this is incorrect. The punishment of the grave is mentioned in numerous places in the Makki surahs of the Qur’an, in language clear enough to leave no room for doubt — see, for example, Al-An’am 93, An-Nahl 28, Al-Mu’minun 99–100, and Al-Mu’min (Ghafir) 45–46, all of which are Makki surahs. So if Ali’s statement proves anything, it is that Surah At-Takathur had already been revealed before these Makki surahs, and that its revelation removed the Companions’ doubt about the punishment of the grave. This is precisely why, despite these reports, the overwhelming majority of commentators agree that it is Makki. Indeed, this surah is not only Makki — its content and style indicate that it belongs to the surahs revealed in the early Makkan period.
Theme and Subject Matter
In this surah, people are warned of the evil consequences of that worldliness which keeps them, until the moment of death, engrossed in amassing ever more wealth, worldly benefits, pleasures, status, and power — competing with one another for these things and taking pride in acquiring them — so absorbed in this single preoccupation that they have no awareness left to turn toward anything beyond it. After warning of its evil outcome, people are told that these bounties which they are gathering here so carelessly are not merely bounties — they are also the means of their trial. They will be held accountable in the Hereafter for every one of these bounties.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
By time, indeed mankind is in loss, except those who believe, do righteous deeds, and enjoin upon one another the truth and enjoin upon one another patience.
Name:
The word “Al-Asr” from the first verse has been designated as its name.
Period of Revelation:
Although Mujahid, Qatadah, and Muqatil have called it Madinan, the great majority of commentators consider it Makkan, and its content testifies that it must have been revealed in the early period of Makkah, when the teachings of Islam were expressed in brief and deeply moving phrases, so that listeners, even if they wished to forget them after hearing them once, could not do so, and they would naturally settle upon people’s tongues.
Theme and Subject Matter:
This surah is an unparalleled example of comprehensive and concise speech. Within a few carefully weighed words, an entire world of meaning has been conveyed — meaning that even an entire book would struggle to fully express. It states, in a completely clear and decisive manner, which path leads to mankind’s success and which path leads to its ruin and destruction. Imam Shafi’i rightly said that if people were to reflect upon this surah, it alone would be sufficient for their guidance. The importance it held in the eyes of the noble Companions can be gauged from the report of Abdullah ibn Hisn al-Darimi Abu Madinah, according to which, among the Companions of the Prophet, whenever two men met, they would not part from one another until one had recited Surah Al-Asr to the other (reference: Tabarani).

It is Allah’s fire, kindled to a blaze, which will reach to the very hearts. It will close in on them from all sides, while they are tied to pillars stretched high.
Surah Al-Humazah
Name:
The word “Humazah” in the first verse has been taken as the name of this surah.
Period of Revelation:
All commentators agree that this surah is Meccan in origin. Reflecting on its theme and style of expression also suggests that it belongs to the surahs revealed in the early Meccan period.
Subject and Theme:
This surah condemns certain moral vices that were found among the wealth-obsessed rich of the pre-Islamic (Jahiliyyah) society — vices that every Arab knew were actually present in their society, and which everyone considered reprehensible; no one regarded them as virtues. After presenting this repugnant character, the surah describes what fate awaits such people in the Hereafter. Both elements — the character on one hand, and its consequence in the Hereafter on the other — are presented in a manner that leads the listener’s mind, almost automatically, to the conclusion that such conduct deserves precisely this outcome. And since people of this character go unpunished in this world, indeed appear to prosper and flourish, the occurrence of the Hereafter becomes absolutely inevitable.
If this surah is examined within the sequence of surahs running from Surah Az-Zalzalah up to this point, one can clearly see the method by which, in the early Meccan period, the beliefs and moral teachings of Islam were impressed upon people’s minds. Surah Az-Zalzalah explains that on the Day of Judgment, a person’s complete record of deeds will be placed before him, and not even the smallest good or evil deed done in this world will fail to appear before him there. Surah Al-Adiyat points to the plunder, bloodshed, and pillaging that was rampant throughout Arabia; after making people realize that such misuse of the powers granted by God amounts to immense ingratitude, it informs them that the matter will not end in this world alone — rather, in the next life after death, not only their actions but even their intentions will be scrutinized, and their Lord knows full well who deserves what treatment. Surah Al-Qari’ah, after presenting a picture of the Day of Resurrection, warns people that a person’s good or bad outcome in the Hereafter will depend on whether the scale of his good deeds is heavy or light. Surah At-Takathur takes to task the materialistic mentality that keeps people striving, until their last breath, to acquire ever more worldly benefits, pleasures, comforts, and status, and to outdo one another — and then, after warning of the evil consequence of this heedlessness, tells people that this world is not a feast for plunder where one may grab as much as one pleases in whatever manner one likes; rather, for every single blessing received here, one will have to answer to one’s Lord — how it was obtained, and how it was used once obtained. Surah Al-Asr states in the most direct terms that every individual of humankind, every group, every nation — indeed the entire human world — is in loss, unless its members have faith and righteous deeds, and unless mutual exhortation to truth and patience becomes a common practice within their society.

In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
Have you not seen what your Lord did with the People of the Elephant? Did He not bring their scheme to nothing? And He sent against them flocks of birds, pelting them with stones of baked clay, then He reduced them to the state of straw eaten up by cattle.

A note on context: this is Surah Al-Fil (Ch. 105), describing Abraha’s failed expedition against the Kaaba. Want me to pull in Mawdudi’s Tafheem commentary on this passage, or is this for a standalone translation piece?

Surah Al-Fil (The Elephant)
Name:
The name is derived from the words Ashab al-Fil (the People of the Elephant) in the very first verse.
Period of Revelation:
This surah is unanimously agreed to be Makkan, and considering its historical background, it appears that it was revealed in the early period of Makkah itself.
Historical Background:
In Najran, the Jewish ruler of Yemen, Dhu Nawas, had persecuted the followers of Christ (peace be upon him). To avenge this, the Christian kingdom of Abyssinia attacked Yemen, ending Himyarite rule, and by 525 CE Abyssinian rule was established over the entire region. This whole campaign was actually carried out through cooperation between the Roman Empire of Constantinople and the Abyssinian government, since the Abyssinians had no notable naval fleet at that time. The fleet was provided by the Romans, and through it Abyssinia landed its army of 70,000 on the coast of Yemen.
To understand what follows, it should be understood from the outset that this was not driven purely by religious zeal — economic and political interests were also at work behind it, and in fact were probably the real motive, with revenge for the blood of the persecuted Christians being little more than a pretext. Ever since the Roman Empire had taken control of Egypt and Syria, it had been trying to wrest from the Arabs the trade route — which the Arabs had controlled for centuries — connecting East Africa, India, Indonesia, and other lands with Roman territories, so that all its profits would go to Rome itself and Arab merchants would be cut out of the middle. For this purpose, in 24 or 25 BCE, Caesar Augustus landed a large army under the Roman general Aelius Gallus on the western coast of Arabia, intending to seize the maritime route running from southern Arabia toward Syria. But the harsh geographic conditions of Arabia caused this expedition to fail. After this, the Romans brought their war fleet into the Red Sea and put an end to the Arabs’ sea trade, leaving only the land route to them. To seize this sea route, the Romans allied with the Christian government of Abyssinia and, by aiding it with their fleet, helped it conquer Yemen.
Arab historians differ regarding the Abyssinian army that invaded Yemen. Hafiz Ibn Kathir writes that it was led by two commanders, Aryat and Abrahah, while Muhammad ibn Ishaq’s account states that the commander-in-chief was Aryat, with Abrahah serving under him. Both agree, however, that Abrahah and Aryat later fought each other; Aryat was killed in this confrontation, and Abrahah took control of the country, afterward persuading the King of Abyssinia to appoint him as his viceroy over Yemen.
In contrast, Greek and Syriac historians hold that after the conquest of Yemen, when the Abyssinians began killing the resisting Yemeni chiefs one by one, one chief, al-Sumayfa Ashwa (rendered by Greek historians as Esymphaeus), submitted to Abyssinian authority and, pledging to pay tribute, obtained from the King of Abyssinia a charter to govern Yemen. But the Abyssinian army rebelled against him and installed Abrahah as governor in his place. This man had been the slave of a Greek merchant in the Abyssinian port of Adulis, and through his own shrewdness had gained great influence within the Abyssinian army that had conquered Yemen. The forces the King of Abyssinia sent to suppress him either joined him or were defeated by him. Eventually, after the King of Abyssinia’s death, his successor recognized Abrahah as his viceroy over Yemen. (Greek historians render his name as Abramus, and Syriac historians as Abraham; “Abrahah” is likely the Abyssinian pronunciation of this name, since in Arabic it is pronounced Ibrahim.)
This man gradually became the independent king of Yemen, though nominally he acknowledged the suzerainty of the King of Abyssinia and styled himself Mufawwadh al-Malik (Viceroy). The extent of the influence he came to wield can be gauged from the fact that when he completed repairs to the Marib Dam in 543 CE, he held a grand celebration attended by envoys of the Roman Emperor, the King of Persia, the King of Hira, and the King of Ghassan. A detailed account of this is recorded on the inscription Abrahah had placed at the Marib Dam — an inscription that survives to this day and was transcribed by Glaser. (Reference: for further details, see Tafheem ul-Quran, Volume 4, commentary on Surah Saba, footnote 37.)
Having fully consolidated his power in Yemen, Abrahah set about pursuing the very purpose that had been the underlying aim of the Roman Empire and its Abyssinian Christian allies from the start of this whole campaign: namely, to spread Christianity in Arabia on one hand, and on the other to seize control of the trade that passed through Arab hands between the eastern lands and Roman territories. This need had grown all the more pressing because Rome’s power struggle with the Sassanid Empire of Persia had closed off all other Roman trade routes to the eastern lands.
To this end, Abrahah built a magnificent church in Sana’a, the capital of Yemen, referred to by Arab historians as al-Qalis, al-Qulays, or al-Qullays (an Arabized form of the Greek word Ekklesia, from which the Urdu word kalisa — church — is also derived). According to Muhammad ibn Ishaq’s account, once this was completed, Abrahah wrote to the King of Abyssinia saying he would not rest until he had diverted the Arabs’ pilgrimage from the Kaaba to this church. (Having gained political power in Yemen, the Christians made repeated attempts to build a rival Kaaba and establish it as a new center for the Arabs; they had also built a Kaaba in Najran.) Ibn Kathir writes that Abrahah openly proclaimed this intention throughout Yemen and had it announced publicly.
In our view, the purpose of this act was to provoke the Arabs into some action that would give him a pretext to attack Makkah and demolish the Kaaba. Muhammad ibn Ishaq relates that, enraged by this announcement, an Arab somehow managed to enter the church and defile it. Ibn Kathir states that this act was committed by a man from the Quraysh, while Muqatil ibn Sulayman’s account holds that some young men of the Quraysh went and set the church on fire. Whichever of these actually occurred, neither would be at all surprising, since Abrahah’s announcement was certainly highly provocative, and in that age of pre-Islamic ignorance, it would not be hard to understand why an Arab, or a Qurayshi, or a few young Qurayshi men, might be provoked into defiling or burning down the church.
But it is also not at all unlikely that Abrahah himself secretly had one of his own men commit such an act, so as to obtain a pretext for marching on Makkah — thereby destroying the Quraysh and intimidating all the Arabs, achieving both his objectives at once. In any case, whichever scenario is true, when news reached Abrahah that the devotees of the Kaaba had insulted his church in this way, he swore that he would not rest until he had demolished the Kaaba.
He then set out toward Makkah in 570 or 571 CE with 60,000 troops and 13 elephants (some accounts say 9 elephants). Along the way, a Yemeni chief named Dhu Nafr first gathered a force of Arabs to resist him, but was defeated and captured. Then, in the territory of Khath’am, an Arab chief named Nufayl ibn Habib al-Khath’ami brought his tribe to confront him, but he too was defeated and captured, and to save his life agreed to serve as a guide for Abrahah’s army.
As they approached Ta’if, the Banu Thaqif realized they could not withstand so great a force, and feared that Abrahah might also destroy the temple of their deity, Lat. So their chief, Mas’ud, led a delegation to meet Abrahah and told him: “Our temple is not the shrine you have come to destroy — that is in Makkah. So spare our temple, and we will provide you guides to show you the way to Makkah.” Abrahah agreed, and the Banu Thaqif sent a man named Abu Righal along with him. When they were within three leagues of Makkah, at a place called al-Mughammas, Abu Righal died, and for generations afterward the Arabs would throw stones at his grave. They also taunted the Banu Thaqif for years for having helped those who attacked the House of Allah in order to save the temple of Lat.
According to Muhammad ibn Ishaq’s account, from al-Mughammas, Abrahah sent his advance guard forward, and it seized much livestock from the people of Tihamah and the Quraysh, including two hundred camels belonging to Abd al-Muttalib, grandfather of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abrahah then sent an envoy to Makkah, conveying to its people the message: “I have not come to fight you, but to demolish this House (the Kaaba). If you do not resist, I will not harm you or your property.” He also instructed his envoy to bring their chief to him if they wished to negotiate.
The greatest chief of Makkah at that time was Abd al-Muttalib. The envoy met him and delivered Abrahah’s message. Abd al-Muttalib replied: “We have no power to fight Abrahah. This is the House of Allah; if He wills, He will protect His own House.” The envoy said: “Come with me to Abrahah.” Abd al-Muttalib agreed and went with him. He was so dignified and impressive in appearance that Abrahah was deeply struck on seeing him, and stepped down from his throne to sit beside him. Abrahah then asked what he wanted. Abd al-Muttalib said: “That the camels which have been seized from me be returned to me.” Abrahah said: “I was very impressed by you when I first saw you, but this request of yours has lowered you in my esteem — you ask about your camels, yet say nothing about this House, which is the center of reverence for you and your ancestral faith.” Abd al-Muttalib replied: “I am only the owner of my camels, and it is only about them that I am petitioning you. As for this House, it has a Lord, who will protect it Himself.” Abrahah said: “He will not be able to protect it from me.” Abd al-Muttalib said: “That is between you and Him.” Having said this, he rose and left Abrahah, who then returned his camels to him.
A narration from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) differs from this account and makes no mention of any request regarding camels. According to the reports transmitted from him by Abd ibn Humayd, Ibn al-Mundhir, Ibn Marduyah, al-Hakim, Abu Nu’aym, and al-Bayhaqi, when Abrahah reached a place called al-Sifah (located near the boundary of the sacred precinct, between the mountains of Arafat and Ta’if), Abd al-Muttalib went to him personally and said: “What need did you have to come all the way here? Had you wanted anything, you could have sent word, and we would have brought it to you ourselves.” Abrahah said: “I have heard that this House is a sanctuary of peace; I have come to end that peace.” Abd al-Muttalib said: “This is the House of Allah; until now He has not allowed anyone to overpower it.” Abrahah replied: “We will not turn back without demolishing it.” Abd al-Muttalib said: “Take whatever you wish from us, and go back.” But Abrahah refused, and leaving Abd al-Muttalib behind, ordered his army to advance.
Setting aside the discrepancy between these two accounts without preferring one over the other, in either case it is entirely clear that Makkah and the surrounding tribes did not have the strength to fight such a vast army and defend the Kaaba by force. It is therefore quite understandable that the Quraysh made no attempt at armed resistance — after all, at the Battle of the Trench (al-Ahzab), even with the combined forces of polytheist and Jewish tribes, the Quraysh could muster at most ten to twelve thousand men; how could they have confronted an army of 60,000?
Muhammad ibn Ishaq relates that upon returning from Abrahah’s camp, Abd al-Muttalib told the Quraysh to take their families and retreat into the mountains, to avoid being massacred. He then went, along with a few chiefs of the Quraysh, to the sacred precinct, and taking hold of the door-ring of the Kaaba, prayed to Allah Almighty to protect His House and its custodians. At that time, 360 idols stood within the Kaaba — yet in this critical hour, the people forgot all of them and stretched out their hands in supplication to Allah alone. In the prayers recorded in history from this occasion, no name other than the One God is found at all.
Ibn Hisham, in his Sirah, records these verses of Abd al-Muttalib:
“O Lord! A man defends his own household; so defend Your own House.
Let not their cross and their schemes ever prevail over Your design.
If You mean to leave them and our tribe to their fate, then do as You will.”
Al-Suhayli, in Rawd al-Anf, also records this related verse:
“Against the followers of the cross and its worshippers, today aid Your own people.”
Ibn Jarir also records these verses, recited by Abd al-Muttalib as he prayed on this occasion:
“O my Lord, I place my hope in none but You against them.
O my Lord, defend Your sanctuary from them — the enemy of this House is Your enemy.
Prevent them from destroying our settlement.”
Having prayed thus, Abd al-Muttalib and his companions also withdrew into the mountains. The next day, Abrahah advanced to enter Makkah, but his lead elephant, Mahmud, suddenly sat down. It was struck repeatedly, prodded with hooks, even wounded — yet it would not move. Whenever it was turned south, north, or east, it would run; but the moment it was turned toward Makkah, it would immediately sit down and refuse to go any further.
At that moment, flocks upon flocks of birds appeared, carrying pebbles in their beaks and claws, and rained these stones down upon the army. Wherever a stone struck, the victim’s body began to rot. Muhammad ibn Ishaq and Ikrimah relate that this was smallpox, and that smallpox was seen in Arabia for the first time that very year. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) relates that wherever a pebble struck a person, severe itching set in, and upon scratching, the skin would split and the flesh would begin to fall away. Another narration from Ibn Abbas states that flesh and blood began flowing like water, and the bones became exposed.
The same happened to Abrahah himself — his body fell apart piece by piece, and wherever a piece fell away, pus and blood flowed from it. In the chaos, the army began fleeing toward Yemen. They sought out Nufayl ibn Habib al-Khath’ami, whom they had taken from his land to serve as their guide, and asked him to show them the way back. He flatly refused, reciting:
“Where is there to flee, when God is in pursuit, and the mutilated one (Abrahah) is defeated, not victorious?”
In this rout, people fell and died at every step along the way. Ata ibn Yasar relates that not all of them perished at once — some died right there, while others kept falling as they fled along the road. Abrahah himself died upon reaching the land of Khath’am.
Allah Almighty did not stop at inflicting this punishment alone — within three or four years, He ended Abyssinian rule over Yemen forever. History shows that after the Incident of the Elephant, Abyssinian power in Yemen collapsed entirely; Yemeni chiefs rose in revolt one after another. Eventually, a Yemeni chief named Sayf ibn Dhi Yazan sought military aid from the King of Persia, and a mere thousand Persian troops, arriving with six ships, proved sufficient to bring an end to Abyssinian rule. This occurred in 575 CE.
This event (of the elephant) took place near a place called Muhassir, close to the valley of Mukhassab, between Muzdalifah and Mina. According to a narration in Sahih Muslim and Abu Dawud — transmitted by Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq from his father Imam Muhammad al-Baqir, who related it from Jabir ibn Abdullah — regarding the account of the Farewell Pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it is stated that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded from Muzdalifah toward Mina, he quickened his pace through the valley of Muhassir. Imam Nawawi, commenting on this, writes that the incident of the People of the Elephant occurred at this very spot, and therefore it is the established practice (sunnah) to pass through it quickly. In the Muwatta, Imam Malik relates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that all of Muzdalifah is a place for stopping, except for the valley of Muhassir, where one should not stop.
In the verses of Nufayl ibn Habib recorded by Ibn Ishaq, he gives an eyewitness account of the event:
“O Rudaynah, would that you had seen — though you could never have seen — what we witnessed near the valley of Mukhassab.
I thanked Allah when I saw the birds, and feared that stones might fall upon us too.
Each of these men was searching for Nufayl, as though I owed the Abyssinians some debt.”
This was so momentous an event that it became famous throughout Arabia, and many poets composed verses about it. What stands out clearly in these poems is that everyone attributed it entirely to the miraculous power of Allah Almighty — nowhere, even by hint or suggestion, is it claimed that the idols worshipped in the Kaaba had any role in it.
For example, Abdullah ibn al-Zib’ari said: “There were sixty thousand who could not return to their own land, nor did their sick one (Abrahah) survive after their return. Before them were the Aad and the Jurhum, and Allah watches over His servants and sustains [His House]. Rise and worship your Lord, and touch the corners of the House of Allah between the hills of Makkah and Mina. When the help of the Lord of the Throne reached you, the armies of that king turned these people back in a state where some lay in the dust and others lay stoned.”
Moreover, there is a report from Umm Hani and Zubayr ibn al-Awwam that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The Quraysh worshipped none but Allah alone, without partner, for ten years” (some versions say seven years). Umm Hani’s narration is recorded by Imam Bukhari in his Tarikh, and by al-Tabarani, al-Hakim, Ibn Marduyah, and al-Bayhaqi in their books of hadith. Zubayr’s account is narrated by al-Tabarani, Ibn Marduyah, and Ibn Asakir, and is further corroborated by a mursal narration of Sa’id ibn al-Musayyab, recorded by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi in his Tarikh.
The year in which this event occurred came to be known as Aam al-Fil (“the Year of the Elephant”), and it was in this same year that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was born. Scholars of hadith and historians are nearly unanimous that the Incident of the People of the Elephant took place in the month of Muharram, and that the Prophet’s blessed birth occurred in Rabi al-Awwal. Most hold that his birth took place fifty days after the Incident of the Elephant.
Theme and Purpose:
Bearing in mind the historical details recorded above, when one reflects on Surah Al-Fil, it becomes readily understandable why the surah confines itself, with such brevity, merely to mentioning Allah’s punishment upon the People of the Elephant. The event was not particularly old — every child in Makkah knew of it, and the Arabs in general were well aware of it. All the Arabs acknowledged that it was Allah Almighty, not any goddess or god, who had protected the Kaaba from Abrahah’s assault. It was to Allah alone that the chiefs of Quraysh had prayed for help, and for several years afterward the Quraysh remained so affected by this event that they worshipped none but Allah.
For this reason, there was no need in Surah Al-Fil to recount these details — a mere reminder of the event sufficed, so that the Quraysh especially, and the Arabs in general, might reflect within their hearts on what exactly Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling them to — nothing other than this: that all other objects of worship be abandoned, and Allah alone, without partner, be worshipped. They should also consider that if they resorted to force to suppress this call to truth, they would fall under the wrath of the very God who had utterly destroyed the People of the Elephant.
