INTRODUCTORY SUMMARY
In his commentary on Surah Yunus (10:66–67), Maulana Maududi explains that anyone who seeks the truth about religion without direct revelation must rely on some form of philosophical inquiry, and that the soundness of their conclusions depends entirely on the method they use. He surveys the approaches people have taken: polytheists relying on fancy, mystics and yogis on meditation built upon conjecture, philosophers on speculative reasoning dressed up as logic, and scientists who abandon their own method once they enter metaphysics. All of these are compounded by prejudice that closes the mind to other views. Against this, the Quran sets out a sound method. First, listen without bias to the prophets, who speak from knowledge. Then test their claims against the “signs” observable in the universe. Using the alternation of night and day as an example, Maududi shows how a single natural phenomenon testifies to one wise, purposeful and merciful Lord who alone deserves worship. He concludes that religions invented through guesswork cannot stand against such evidence.
Surah Yunus (10:66–67)
Behold! Whoever dwells in the heavens or on the earth, all of them belong to Allah. Those who call upon their self-made partners besides Allah follow nothing but conjecture and surmise, and do nothing but guess.⁶⁶ It is Allah who made the night for you, so that you may find rest in it, and made the day bright. Surely in this are signs for those who hear (the Prophet’s call with open ears).⁶⁷
Footnote 65
This subject needs explanation, though the verse states it in very few words.
Philosophical inquiry tries to discover whether some reality lies hidden behind what we outwardly see and perceive in this universe, and if so, what that reality is. For everyone who does not receive knowledge of reality directly through revelation and inspiration, this inquiry is the only means of forming an opinion about religion. No one can reach any conclusion about religion without some kind of philosophical inquiry, whether he ends up in atheism, polytheism or belief in God.
The religion presented by the prophets can also be tested only in this way. A person must reflect philosophically, as far as he is able, and try to satisfy himself whether the reality that the prophets say lies concealed behind the phenomena of the universe appeals to the heart. Whether this inquiry is right or wrong depends entirely on its method. A wrong method leads to a wrong opinion, and a right method to a right one. Let us now survey the methods that different groups in the world have adopted for this inquiry:
The polytheists based their search on pure fancy (wahm).
The illuminationists (ishraqis) and yogis put on a show of meditation (muraqabah). They claim that they look past the outward and directly observe the inner reality. In fact, they based their investigation on conjecture (gumān). What they meditate on is really their own conjecture. They first form a notion through conjecture, then fix their imagination on it and press their minds upon it, until that same notion begins to appear to them as if it were alive and moving. That is all there is to what they claim to see.
The formal philosophers made analogical reasoning (qiyās) the basis of their inquiry. In essence it is still only conjecture. They sensed that this conjecture was lame, so they tried to make it walk on the crutches of logical argument and artificial reasoning, and they named the result qiyās.
The scientists adopted a scientific method for investigation within the domain of science. As soon as they stepped into metaphysics, however, they too abandoned that method and followed speculation, conjecture, estimates and guesswork.
The fancies and conjectures of all these groups were then, in one way or another, also afflicted by the disease of prejudice. Prejudice made them refuse to listen to anyone else. It made them turn onto their own favoured path, and once they had turned, it kept them on it.
The Quran declares this method of inquiry fundamentally wrong. It says that the root cause of your going astray is that you base your search for truth on conjecture and speculation, and then, out of prejudice, you are not even willing to listen to a reasonable word from anyone. Because of this twofold error, finding the reality on your own was impossible for you from the start. It has now also become impossible for you to examine the religion presented by the prophets and reach a correct opinion about it.
In contrast, the Quran teaches the correct scholarly and rational method of philosophical inquiry:
- First, listen with open ears and without prejudice to those who describe reality. They claim that they are telling you what reality is on the basis of knowledge (‘ilm), not on the basis of speculation and conjecture, or meditation and istidraj (spiritual exercises that produce extraordinary effects).
- Then reflect on the traces of the universe that come within your observation and experience. The Quran calls these traces “signs.”
- Gather and arrange the testimony of these signs, and examine it.
- Keep searching whether this outward world itself contains indications that point toward the reality these people describe as lying behind it.
If such indications appear and what they point to is clear, there is no reason to deny for no reason those people whose account is found to agree with the testimony of the evidence. … This very method is the foundation of the philosophy of Islam. It is regrettable that even Muslim philosophers abandoned it and followed in the footsteps of Plato and Aristotle.
Throughout the Quran, this method is not only enjoined but practised. The Quran repeatedly presents the signs of the universe and draws conclusions from them to arrive at the reality. In this way it gives what amounts to a regular training, so that this manner of thinking and searching becomes firmly rooted in people’s minds.
In this verse too, as an example, attention is drawn to only two signs: night and day. The alternation of night and day comes about because of an extremely regular change in the relative positions of the sun and the earth. This regularity points to several things:
- A single universal Regulator. It is a clear sign of the existence of a universal Regulator, a Sovereign who holds overriding authority over the entire universe. It also shows that this universal Regulator is One.
- Wisdom and purpose. Countless interests of all the beings on earth depend on this cycle of night and day. This shows evident wisdom and purposefulness. The Regulator is not frivolous and does not act in play. He is Wise and acts with purpose.
- Lordship and mercy. The cycle shows clear signs of lordship (rububiyyah), mercy and providence. It is proof that the One who created these beings on earth also provides for the needs of their existence.
- The right to worship. As Benefactor and Sustainer, He alone deserves worship.
- No other lord. Whoever is subject to the cycle of night and day is not a lord but one who is sustained by a lord (marbūb). He is not a master but a slave.
Against this testimony of the evidence, how can the religions that the polytheists invented out of conjecture and speculation possibly be right?
