70&10:68,69 God Has No Need of a Son: Why?

Introductory summary :

God Has No Need of a Son: Why?

The Quran (Yunus 10:68) challenges those who claim God has taken a son: what proof do you have, or are you saying about God what you do not know? Such a belief rests on conjecture, not knowledge. Every way of understanding it reduces God to the level of His creatures.

  • A begotten son would make God like a mortal animal. An animal needs a mate and offspring because it cannot last on its own and must live on through its descendants.
  • An adopted son as an heir would make God like a childless man. Such a man adopts someone to inherit from him and to make up for what he lacks.
  • An adopted son out of special affection would make God like a human being swayed by emotion, who singles out one person among many.

The Quran answers all three with three truths:

  1. Subhan Allah: God is free from every defect and weakness that these ideas attribute to Him.
  2. He is Self-Sufficient: He has none of the needs (survival, legacy, compensation, companionship) that lead humans to seek children.
  3. Everything belongs to Him: all in the heavens and the earth are His servants and His property, so none can be raised to a share in His divinity.

God does love some servants more than others for their righteousness. That love brings them peace and good tidings in this world and the next. It never lifts a servant from servanthood to sonship.

Surah Yunus (10:68–70)

People have said that Allah has taken a son.⁶⁶ Glory be to Allah!⁶⁷ He is Self-Sufficient. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him.⁶⁸ What proof do you have for this claim? Do you say things about Allah that you do not know? O Muhammad ﷺ, say: those who fabricate lies against Allah will never prosper. Let them enjoy themselves for a few days in the life of this world. Then they must return to Us, and then, in recompense for the disbelief they kept committing, We shall make them taste a severe punishment. (Ruku 7)

Footnote 66

The preceding verses reproached people for the ignorance of basing their religion on speculation and conjecture instead of knowledge. They also make no attempt, by any scholarly method, to find out whether the religion they keep following has any proof behind it. Continuing the same theme, this verse reproaches the Christians and followers of certain other religions for the folly of declaring someone to be God’s son on the basis of mere conjecture.

Footnote 67

Subhan Allah is sometimes said as an exclamation of astonishment. At other times its literal meaning is intended, namely that “Allah is free from every defect.” Here the phrase carries both meanings. It expresses astonishment at what these people say. It also answers them: Allah is free from all defects, so how could a son possibly be attributed to Him?

Footnote 68

Three points are made here in refutation of their claim:

  1. Allah is free from all defects.
  2. He is Self-Sufficient.
  3. Everything that exists in the heavens and the earth is His property.

A little explanation makes these brief answers easy to understand.

Obviously, a son is either begotten or adopted.

If they mean a begotten son, they are likening God to an animal. An animal is mortal as an individual. Its existence can continue only if it belongs to a species, has a mate from that species, and has offspring through their sexual union, so that its kind and its work carry on through them.

If they mean that God has adopted someone as a son, there are two possibilities:

  • The childless man. They may be likening God to a man who has no children. Such a man adopts a member of his own species as a son, so that the son may become his heir. The adoption makes up, at least in name, for some of the loss he suffers from being childless.
  • Human emotions. They may suppose that God, like a human being, has emotional inclinations. On this view, God came to love one of His countless servants so much that He took him as a son.

Whichever of these three cases applies, the basic concepts of this belief charge God with many defects, many weaknesses, many shortcomings and many needs.

That is why the verse answers in three phrases:

  • The first phrase says that Allah is free from all the defects, shortcomings and weaknesses you attribute to Him.
  • The second phrase says that He is also free from the needs that lead mortal human beings to require children or to adopt a son.
  • The third phrase states plainly that everyone in the heavens and the earth is Allah’s servant and His property. Allah has no special personal relationship with any of them that would lead Him to single one out above all the rest as His son, His only son, or His heir.

Allah certainly loves some of His servants more than others because of their qualities. That love, however, does not mean that a servant is raised from the station of servitude to a share in divinity. At most, this love entails what an earlier verse has already stated: those who believe and adopt the way of taqwa have no cause for fear or grief, and for them there is nothing but good tidings, both in this world and in the Hereafter.

Alhamdulillah, the credit goes to the clarity of Maulana Maududi’s original reasoning. If you’d like, I can turn this into a one-page handout for a study circle, or translate it into any of the languages you work in.

And Alhamdulillah to cloude ai for helping in translation, summarizing this difficult topic.
