بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
وَ الۡعٰدِیٰتِ ضَبۡحًا ۙ﴿۱﴾ فَالۡمُوۡرِیٰتِ قَدۡحًا ۙ﴿۲﴾ فَالۡمُغِیۡرٰتِ صُبۡحًا ۙ﴿۳﴾ فَاَثَرۡنَ بِہٖ نَقۡعًا ۙ﴿۴﴾ فَوَسَطۡنَ بِہٖ جَمۡعًا ۙ﴿۵﴾ اِنَّ الۡاِنۡسَانَ لِرَبِّہٖ لَکَنُوۡدٌ ۚ﴿۶﴾ وَ اِنَّہٗ عَلٰی ذٰلِکَ لَشَہِیۡدٌ ۚ﴿۷﴾ وَ اِنَّہٗ لِحُبِّ الۡخَیۡرِ لَشَدِیۡدٌ ؕ﴿۸﴾ اَفَلَا یَعۡلَمُ اِذَا بُعۡثِرَ مَا فِی الۡقُبُوۡرِ ۙ﴿۹﴾ وَ حُصِّلَ مَا فِی الصُّدُوۡرِ ﴿ۙ۱۰﴾ اِنَّ رَبَّہُمۡ بِہِمۡ یَوۡمَئِذٍ لَّخَبِیۡرٌ ٪﴿۱۱﴾
اللہ کے نام سے جو رحمان و رحیم ہے۔
قسم ہے اُن ﴿گھوڑوں﴾ کی جو پھُنکارے مارتے ہوئے دَوڑتے ہیں، پھر ﴿اپنی ٹاپوں سے﴾ چِنگاریاں جھاڑتے ہیں، پھر صبح سویرے چھاپہ مارتے ہیں، پھر اس موقع پر گَردوغبار اُڑاتے ہیں، پھر اِسی حالت میں کسی مجمع کے اندر جا گھُستے ہیں۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ انسان اپنے ربّ کا بڑا ناشکرا ہے، اور وہ خود اِس پر گواہ ہے، اور وہ مال و دولت کی محبت میں بُری طرح مُبتلا ہے۔ تو کیا وہ اُس وقت کو نہیں جانتا جب قبروں میں جو کچھ﴿ مدفون﴾ ہے اُسے نکال لیا جائے گا، اور سینوں میں جو کچھ ﴿ مخفی﴾ہے اُسے بر آمد کر کے اس کی جانچ پڑتال کی جائے گی؟یقیناً اُن کا ربّ اُس روز اُن سے خوب باخبر ہوگا۔ ؏١
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
By the snorting steeds that run, then strike sparks of fire (with their hooves), then launch their raid at dawn, then raise clouds of dust in this rush, then plunge into the midst of a host. Indeed, man is most ungrateful to his Lord — and he himself bears witness to this — and indeed, he is fiercely engrossed in the love of wealth. Does he not know that when what lies in the graves is brought forth, and what lies hidden in the breasts is disclosed, that Day their Lord will surely have full knowledge of them?
Name:
The surah takes its name from the first word, Al-’Ādiyāt. There is disagreement over whether it was revealed in Makkah or Madinah. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, Jabir, Hasan al-Basri, Ikrimah, and Ata’ hold that it is Makkan. Anas ibn Malik and Qatadah say it is Madinan, while two opinions are reported from Ibn Abbas — one that it is Makkan, the other that it is Madinan. However, the subject matter and style of the surah clearly indicate that it is not only Makkan but belongs to the earliest period of revelation in Makkah.
Subject and Theme:
The purpose of the surah is to make people understand the moral degradation into which man falls when he denies or becomes heedless of the Hereafter, and at the same time to warn people that in the Hereafter not only their outward deeds but even the secrets hidden in their hearts will be examined. To make this point, the surah invokes the widespread lawlessness in Arabia at the time, which had exhausted the whole land — bloodshed everywhere, plunder thriving, tribe raiding tribe, with no one able to spend a night in peace, since at any moment an enemy might fall upon their settlement at dawn. This was a condition known to all Arabs, who felt its ugliness; though the one being plundered mourned it and the plunderer rejoiced in it, when misfortune eventually struck the plunderer himself, he too would recognize what a wretched state they were all caught up in.
By pointing to this situation, the surah explains that, being unaware of the second life after death and of accountability before God in it, man has become ungrateful to his Lord — using the faculties God gave him for oppression and plunder, blinded by the love of wealth, striving to acquire it by any means however impure or vile, his very condition testifying that he misuses the powers granted by his Lord and thereby shows ingratitude. He would never persist in this conduct if he knew of the time when he must rise alive from the graves, and when the very intentions and purposes hidden in hearts — which drove him to his various deeds in the world — will be drawn out and laid bare. On that Day, the Lord of mankind will know fully well who has done what, and what treatment each deserves.
