INTRODUCTION
From here until the end of the Word of Allah (i.e., the Quran), most of the surahs that are found appear — from their subject matter and style of expression — to have been revealed during that period when, after the first seven verses of Surah Al-Muddaththir, the revelation of the Quran began descending like rain. In the surahs that were revealed in rapid succession, Islam, its foundational beliefs, and its moral teachings were presented in an extraordinarily powerful and effective manner — in concise and comprehensive phrases — and the people of Makkah were warned about their deviations and errors. This so alarmed the chiefs of the Quraysh that, before the first Hajj season arrived, they convened a conference to devise strategies for discrediting the Prophet ﷺ. (See: Surah Al-Muddaththir.)
In this surah, the deniers of the Afterlife are directly addressed, and their every doubt and every objection has been answered. Through compelling arguments, proof has been furnished for the possibility, the certainty, and the necessity of the Day of Resurrection and the Hereafter. It has also been made unmistakably clear that the real reason those who deny the Afterlife do so is not that their reason finds it impossible — rather, the true driving force behind their denial is that their carnal desires refuse to accept it.
Alongside this, people are warned that the moment whose coming they are denying will indeed arrive; everything they have done will be laid bare before them. And in truth, even before seeing their record of deeds, every person among them will already know within himself what he brought with him from the world — for no one is truly a stranger to himself, no matter how many excuses and pretexts he may fabricate to deceive the world and to soothe his own conscience.
