Who is the Lord of heaven s & earth?

Reflections from chapter AR RA’D

Ask them: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah. Then say to them: When this is the reality, have you, leaving Him aside, taken as your guardians such deities as have no power even over any benefit or harm for themselves? Say: Can the blind and the seeing be equal? Or can light and darkness be alike? Or have the partners they have set up created anything like Allah’s creation, so that creation has become confused for them because of it? Say: Allah alone is the Creator of everything, and He is One, Supreme over all!

Footnote 26 (Surah Ar-Ra’d): Note that these people themselves acknowledged that the Lord of the heavens and earth is Allah. They could not answer this question by denial, for such denial would itself contradict their own belief. Yet when the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them this, they shrank from admitting it openly, because once admitted, believing in Tawhid (the Oneness of God) would necessarily follow, and no reasonable basis for shirk (associating partners with God) would remain. So, sensing the weakness of their position, they would fall silent in response to this question. This is why, at many places in the Qur’an, Allah instructs the Prophet (peace be upon him) to ask them: Who is the Creator of the earth and heavens? Who is the Lord of the universe? Who provides you sustenance? Then He commands: say yourself, “Allah” — and then argues that if all these matters belong to Allah, then who, after all, are these others whom you keep worshipping?

Footnote 27: By “the blind” is meant the person before whom the signs and evidences of Allah’s Oneness are spread everywhere in the universe, yet he sees none of them. And by “the seeing” is meant one for whom, in every atom and every leaf of the universe, the registers of the knowledge of the Creator lie open. The meaning of Allah’s question here is: O you who are blind in reason! If you yourselves perceive nothing, then how can one who possesses seeing eyes gouge them out? How is it possible for one who sees the truth plainly to go about stumbling like you people devoid of insight?

Footnote 28: By “light” is meant the light of true knowledge which was granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his followers. By “darkness” is meant the darkness of ignorance in which the deniers were wandering lost. The meaning of the question is: how can one who has already received the light choose to extinguish his lamp and accept stumbling about in darkness? If you do not value light, so be it. But one who has attained it, who has come to know the difference between light and darkness, who clearly sees the straight path in the light of day — how could he possibly be willing to abandon light and wander lost in darkness?

Footnote 29: The meaning of this question is: if some things in the world had been created by Allah and others by someone else, and it were difficult to determine which is Allah’s creative work and which belongs to others, then indeed there might be some reasonable basis for shirk. But when these polytheists themselves admit that not one of their deities has created even a single straw or a single hair, and when they themselves acknowledge that these false gods have not even the smallest share in creation, then on what grounds have these false deities been made partners in the Creator’s authority and rights?

Footnote 30: The word actually used is “Qahhar,” which means “the Being who, by His own power, rules over all and holds all in subjection.” The statement that “Allah alone is the Creator of everything” is a reality the polytheists themselves acknowledged and never denied. And the statement that “He is One and Supreme” is the necessary consequence of that acknowledged reality — one which, having accepted the first truth, no rational person can then deny. For whoever is the Creator of everything is necessarily One and Unique, since everything else is His creation — how then could any created thing share with its Creator in His essence, attributes, authority, or rights? Likewise, He is necessarily Supreme (Qahhar), because for creation to be subdued before its Creator is inherent in the very concept of being created. If the Creator did not possess complete dominance, how could He create at all? So for one who acknowledges Allah as Creator, it becomes impossible to deny these two purely rational and logical conclusions — after which it becomes utterly unreasonable for anyone to abandon the Creator to worship the created, or abandon the Supreme to call upon the subdued for relief from hardship.
