1. ‘Ad (People of Hud)

Surah Al-Fajr 89:6-8

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ (٦) إِرَمَ ذَاتِ الْعِمَادِ (٧) الَّتِي لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِي الْبِلَادِ (٨)

“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ‘Ad — [with] Iram — who had lofty pillars, the likes of whom had never been created in the land?”

Surah Al-Fajr 89:9

وَثَمُودَ الَّذِينَ جَابُوا الصَّخْرَ بِالْوَادِ (٩)

“And Thamud, who carved out the rocks in the valley.”

Wrongs committed:

● Arrogance and pride in their physical strength (41:15)

● Rejected their prophet Hud and his call to monotheism (7:65-66)

● Built monuments/pillars out of vanity, not need (26:128-129)

● Persisted in tyranny and transgression despite repeated warnings (89:11-12)

Mode of destruction: A violent, roaring wind for seven nights and eight days (69:6-7)

2. Thamud (People of Saleh)

Surah Ash-Shams 91:11-14

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَاهَا (١١) إِذِ انبَعَثَ أَشْقَاهَا (١٢) فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ نَاقَةَ اللَّهِ وَسُقْيَاهَا (١٣) فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنبِهِمْ فَسَوَّاهَا (١٤)

“Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression… but they denied him and hamstrung her. So their Lord brought down upon them destruction for their sin and leveled it.”

Wrongs committed:

● Rejected Saleh (AS) and demanded a miraculous sign

● Hamstrung and killed the she-camel sent as a divine sign, breaking their covenant (91:13-14; 7:77)

● Arrogance tied to their engineering feats — carving homes into mountains (89:9; 26:149) while corrupting the earth

● Plotted secretly to kill Saleh and his family (27:48-49)

Mode of destruction: A mighty seizing blast (As-Sayha) (91:14; 11:67)

3. Pharaoh and His People

Surah Al-Qasas 28:4

إِنَّ فِرْعَوْنَ عَلَا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَجَعَلَ أَهْلَهَا شِيَعًا يَسْتَضْعِفُ طَائِفَةً مِّنْهُمْ يُذَبِّحُ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ وَيَسْتَحْيِي نِسَاءَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُفْسِدِينَ

“Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a sector among them, slaughtering their [newborn] sons and keeping their females alive. Indeed, he was of the corrupters.”

Surah Al-‘Ankabut 29:39-40

وَقَارُونَ وَفِرْعَوْنَ وَهَامَانَ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَاءَهُم مُّوسَىٰ بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَمَا كَانُوا سَابِقِينَ (٣٩) فَكُلًّا أَخَذْنَا بِذَنبِهِ ۖ فَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ حَاصِبًا وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَخَذَتْهُ الصَّيْحَةُ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ خَسَفْنَا بِهِ الْأَرْضَ وَمِنْهُم مَّنْ أَغْرَقْنَا ۚ وَمَا كَانَ اللَّهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلَـٰكِن كَانُوا أَنفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُونَ (٤٠)

“…so each We seized for his sin; among them were those upon whom We sent a storm of stones, among them were those who were seized by the blast, among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those We drowned. And Allah would not have wronged them, but it was they who were wronging themselves.”

Wrongs committed:

● Tyranny and enslavement — oppressing the Israelites, killing infant sons (28:4)

● Claiming divinity: “I am your lord, most high” (79:24)

● Rejecting Musa (AS) despite the clear signs shown to him (29:39)

● Arrogance and widespread corruption in the land (10:83)

● Breaking repeated promises to free the Israelites after each plague was lifted (7:133-135)

4. People of Sheba (Saba)

Surah Saba 34:15-17

لَقَدْ كَانَ لِسَبَإٍ فِي مَسْكَنِهِمْ آيَةٌ ۖ جَنَّتَانِ عَن يَمِينٍ وَشِمَالٍ ۖ كُلُوا مِن رِّزْقِ رَبِّكُمْ وَاشْكُرُوا لَهُ ۚ بَلْدَةٌ طَيِّبَةٌ وَرَبٌّ غَفُورٌ (١٥) فَأَعْرَضُوا فَأَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَيْلَ الْعَرِمِ وَبَدَّلْنَاهُم بِجَنَّتَيْهِمْ جَنَّتَيْنِ ذَوَاتَيْ أُكُلٍ خَمْطٍ وَأَثْلٍ وَشَيْءٍ مِّن سِدْرٍ قَلِيلٍ (١٦) ذَٰلِكَ جَزَيْنَاهُم بِمَا كَفَرُوا ۖ وَهَلْ نُجَازِي إِلَّا الْكَفُورَ (١٧)

“There was for Sheba in their dwelling place a sign: two gardens on the right and on the left… But they turned away, so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks, and a few lote trees. That is how We recompensed them because they disbelieved.”

Wrongs committed:

● Ingratitude despite immense provision — a fertile, prosperous land (34:15)

● Turning away from thankfulness to Allah despite being told to eat and be grateful

● Heedlessness and complacency that led them to neglect the very system (the dam) sustaining their prosperity

5. People of Noah (Nuh)

Surah Al-A’raf 7:64

فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَأَنجَيْنَاهُ وَالَّذِينَ مَعَهُ فِي الْفُلْكِ وَأَغْرَقْنَا الَّذِينَ كَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا عَمِينَ

“But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our signs. Indeed, they were a blind people.”

Wrongs committed:

● Persistent disbelief despite 950 years of preaching (29:14)

● Mocking and ridiculing Nuh (AS) (11:38)

● Idol worship — clinging to the named idols Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Ya’uq, and Nasr (71:23)

● Threatening to stone their prophet if he did not stop preaching (26:116)

● Following wealthy, powerful leaders who counseled continued disbelief (71:21)

6. People of Lut

Surah Hud 11:82-83

فَلَمَّا جَاءَ أَمْرُنَا جَعَلْنَا عَالِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهَا حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍ مَّنضُودٍ (٨٢) مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ ۖ وَمَا هِيَ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ بِبَعِيدٍ (٨٣)

“So when Our command came, We made the highest part [of the city] its lowest and rained upon them stones of layered hard clay, marked from your Lord. And it is not from the wrongdoers ever far.”

Wrongs committed:

● Sexual immorality/transgression — approaching men instead of women (7:80-81; 26:165-166)

● Highway robbery and public indecency in their gatherings (29:29)

● Open defiance and mockery when warned (29:29)

● Rejecting Lut (AS) and threatening to expel him (7:82)

Mode of destruction: Cities overturned; rained with stones of baked clay (11:82-83)

7. Companions of the Elephant

Surah Al-Fil 105:1-5

أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِأَصْحَابِ الْفِيلِ (١) أَلَمْ يَجْعَلْ كَيْدَهُمْ فِي تَضْلِيلٍ (٢) وَأَرْسَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ طَيْرًا أَبَابِيلَ (٣) تَرْمِيهِم بِحِجَارَةٍ مِّن سِجِّيلٍ (٤) فَجَعَلَهُمْ كَعَصْفٍ مَّأْكُولٍ (٥)

“Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with the companions of the elephant? Did He not make their plan into misguidance? And He sent against them birds in flocks, striking them with stones of hard clay, and He made them like eaten straw.”

Wrongs committed:

● Military aggression — marching with war elephants to destroy the Ka’bah, a sacred sanctuary

● Arrogant assumption that superior military force guaranteed success against a spiritual/sacred symbol

Mode of destruction: Struck by birds throwing stones of hard clay (105:3-5)

General Qur’anic Principle

Surah Al-Hajj 22:45

فَكَأَيِّن مِّن قَرْيَةٍ أَهْلَكْنَاهَا وَهِيَ ظَالِمَةٌ فَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا

“And how many a city did We destroy while it was committing wrong, so it is [now] fallen into ruin on its foundations.”

Surah Al-Qasas 28:58

“And how many a city have We destroyed that was insolent in its [way of] living.”
