The Computer Analogy: Understanding Fitrah, Corruption and Divine Guidance

Introduction

Every human being is born with built-in “factory settings”: a sense of right and wrong, a pull towards truth, and an instinct to protect the self from harm. Over time these settings can become corrupted, and the One who designed us has always provided the means to restore them. That is the message of prophethood and revealed scripture.

A computer offers a simple way to picture this. It is manufactured with default programs, it can malfunction through damage or misuse, it comes with a manual, and its manufacturer sends engineers to repair it. This document uses that picture to explain the Islamic concept of fitrah, why it is lost, and how Allah restores it.

The analogy is a teaching aid, not a theology. Its limits are set out near the end.

“Mankind was one community; then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good news and warners, and sent down with them the Book in truth to judge between people in what they differed. None differed over it except those who were given it, after clear proofs had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. Then Allah, by His permission, guided the believers to the truth they had differed over. And Allah guides whom He wills to a straight path.”

1. The factory settings: fitrah

Human beings share certain default features regardless of race, culture or religion. They come pre-installed, like the operating system of a new computer.

Physical defaults. We feel pain, and we pull away from its source by reflex before we have time to think. A hand touching a flame is withdrawn in a fraction of a second. This protective program runs without any instruction.

Moral defaults. Across cultures, people recognise that honesty is good and lying is shameful. They recognise that harming the innocent, stealing, and exposing one’s private parts in public are wrong. A child who lies often feels discomfort before anyone has taught them a rule. This inner sense is the moral program.

The Qur’an calls this original design the fitrah:

فَأَقِمْ وَجْهَكَ لِلدِّينِ حَنِيفًا ۚ فِطْرَتَ اللَّهِ الَّتِي فَطَرَ النَّاسَ عَلَيْهَا ۚ لَا تَبْدِيلَ لِخَلْقِ اللَّهِ

“So set your face to the religion, inclining to truth: the fitrah of Allah upon which He created mankind. There is no altering the creation of Allah.” (Ar-Rum 30:30)

“By the soul and the One who proportioned it, and inspired it with its wickedness and its righteousness.” (Ash-Shams 91:7-8)

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Every child is born upon the fitrah; then his parents make him a Jew, a Christian or a Magian” (Bukhari and Muslim). In computer terms, every machine leaves the factory with the same clean system. What is installed on it afterwards comes from its environment.

The deepest default of all is recognition of the Creator. Allah took this covenant from the children of Adam before they were born: أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ, “Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes indeed” (Al-A’raf 7:172).

2. When the system becomes corrupted

Physical corruption

The body’s protective program can be damaged. In diabetic neuropathy, nerves in the feet lose sensation. A patient can step on a nail and keep walking, unaware of the wound until it becomes infected. After a stroke, a limb may lose feeling, and the person can be burned without noticing. In leprosy, loss of pain sensation, not the bacterium itself, leads to most of the injuries and deformities.

The lesson is striking: losing the ability to feel pain is not a blessing but a danger. The alarm system exists to protect us. When it fails, harm continues unnoticed.

Yet the body also has repair mechanisms. With good care, medication and protection, function can be preserved or partly restored.

Moral corruption

The moral program fails in a similar way. A person tells one lie and feels the discomfort of conscience. The second lie is easier. In time lying becomes normal, and the inner alarm no longer sounds. Like the numb foot, the soul is now being harmed without feeling it.

The Prophet ﷺ described this process: when a servant commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. If he repents, it is polished away. If he continues, it spreads until it covers the heart (Tirmidhi, who graded it hasan sahih). This, he said, is the rust Allah mentions:

كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ

“No! Rather, what they used to earn has covered their hearts with rust.” (Al-Mutaffifin 83:14)

Corruption in one machine does not stay there. Lying, theft and injustice spread like a virus through a network, damaging families, communities and whole societies. This is the history described in Al-Baqarah 2:213 and Yunus 10:19: mankind was once one community on tawhid, then they differed and drifted from their original settings.

3. The Architect’s support system: engineers and manuals

A wise manufacturer does not abandon his machines once they leave the factory. He supplies a manual, and he sends qualified engineers when things go wrong. The Architect of creation, Allah, the Planner, Designer and Executor of His project, did exactly this.

“Mankind was one community; then Allah sent the prophets as bearers of good news and warners, and sent down with them the Book in truth to judge between people in what they differed.” (Al-Baqarah 2:213)

In the analogy:

  • The engineers are the prophets. They were sent to every nation (An-Nahl 16:36), each to repair the corruption of his time and reset people to tawhid.
  • The manuals are the revealed books: the Suhuf of Ibrahim, the Tawrah, the Zabur, the Injil and the Qur’an. Each explained how the machine is meant to run.
  • The reset point is the same every time. Every engineer brought the same core instruction: worship Allah alone and avoid false gods (Al-A’raf 7:59, 65, 73, 85).

Over time, earlier manuals were altered by human hands, and their original text could no longer be fully relied on. So the Architect issued a final, complete edition and guaranteed its protection:

إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا الذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُ لَحَافِظُونَ

“Indeed, We sent down the Reminder, and indeed, We are its Guardian.” (Al-Hijr 15:9)

The final engineer, Muhammad ﷺ, is the Seal of the Prophets (Al-Ahzab 33:40). No new engineer will come. The manual and his example, the Sunnah, remain available to every model until the end of the system.

4. Two kinds of models

The Architect made different models for different purposes.

Fixed-function models: the angels. They are created for specific tasks and never malfunction. They stay at their factory settings permanently:

لَّا يَعْصُونَ اللَّهَ مَا أَمَرَهُمْ وَيَفْعَلُونَ مَا يُؤْمَرُونَ

“They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, and they do what they are commanded.” (At-Tahrim 66:6)

Free-will models: humans and jinn. These two models carry a built-in intelligence and the freedom to choose. That freedom gives them potential no fixed-function model has. A human can rise above the angels in rank, or fall below the animals. The Qur’an describes both ends:

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ ۝ ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ ۝ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ

“We have certainly created man in the best of stature, then We return him to the lowest of the low, except those who believe and do righteous deeds.” (At-Tin 95:4-6)

This freedom is the amanah, the trust that the heavens, the earth and the mountains declined to carry, and that man accepted (Al-Ahzab 33:72). It is what makes the human being Allah’s khalifah on earth (Al-Baqarah 2:30).

The purpose of both free-will models is stated plainly: وَمَا خَلَقْتُ الْجِنَّ وَالْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِ, “I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me” (Adh-Dhariyat 51:56). A machine that uses its freedom to fulfil its purpose reaches heights the fixed models cannot. One that misuses it harms itself and the network around it.

5. Repair and reset

A corrupted system is not hopeless. The Architect built in several ways to restore it:

  1. Self-diagnosis: the conscience (an-nafs al-lawwamah, Al-Qiyamah 75:2) still sounds a warning when it has not been silenced.
  2. Reading the manual: returning to the Qur’an, which calls itself a healing for what is in the hearts (Yunus 10:57).
  3. Following the engineer: taking the Prophet ﷺ as the working example of a correctly running system (Al-Ahzab 33:21).
  4. The reset button: tawbah. Sincere repentance restores the machine to its original settings, however long it has malfunctioned:

قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَىٰ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا مِن رَّحْمَةِ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا

“Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.” (Az-Zumar 39:53)

The Prophet ﷺ said that the one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin (Ibn Majah, graded hasan). That is a true factory reset.

Accountability. Some systems refuse every repair, reject every engineer and spread their corruption through the network. History records nations whose persistent corruption ended in divine judgement, such as the people of Nuh, ‘Ad and Thamud. Ultimately every model will be returned to its Maker and assessed on how it used its freedom. That judgement belongs to the Architect alone.

6. Where the analogy stops

Every analogy breaks down somewhere. Stating its limits makes the argument stronger, especially before a critical or interfaith audience.

  • Allah is not like a human engineer. لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ, “There is nothing like Him” (Ash-Shura 42:11). A manufacturer can make mistakes and needs his product. Allah does neither.
  • Humans are not machines. A computer has no soul, no real choice and no moral responsibility. The analogy describes the structure of guidance, not the nature of the human being.
  • Corruption is not only external. A virus enters a computer from outside. Human corruption also comes from within, through desire and choice, and from Shaytan’s whispering. People are held responsible because they chose.
  • The moral defaults are not identical everywhere. Cultures differ on details, and a critic may point this out. The core is widely shared, however: honesty, fairness, and protecting the weak and the innocent. The Qur’an describes the fitrah as an inclination that can be obscured, not a rulebook that cannot be overwritten.
  • “Removal from the network” is divine, not human. This part of the analogy refers only to Allah’s judgement. It must never be read as licence for people to punish or harm others.

Conclusion

Human beings were created upon a clean, true design. Over time that design is damaged, but it is never beyond the reach of its Maker. Prophets and scripture are not an imposition from outside. They are the Designer’s own instructions for restoring what He originally built into us.
