DO WE KNOW OUR LIMITATIONS:

Excellent question — rooted in one of the most powerful Quranic arguments. Let me first locate the precise ayah, then research the science carefully.

Bismillah. This is a beautifully rooted question — anchored in one of the most intellectually devastating challenges in all of the Quran. Let us build the full answer layer by layer.

🌿 The Quranic Challenge — Al-Hajj 22:73
“O mankind! A parable has been made, so listen to it: Verily, those on whom you call besides Allah cannot create a fly, even though they combine together for the purpose. And if the fly snatches away a thing from them, they will have no power to release it from the fly. So weak are the seeker and the sought.”
Notice the extraordinary precision of this ayah — revealed 1,400 years ago:
Allah does not challenge them to create a human, or an elephant, or a whale. He challenges them to create a fly — and then adds a second, even more humbling challenge: if the fly steals something from them, they cannot even retrieve it back.
Modern science has since confirmed exactly why the fly was chosen. A fly is arguably the most aerodynamically complex flying machine on earth — its wing structure, compound eyes, sensory hairs, immune system, and navigation ability involve engineering principles that human science is still reverse-engineering. And the fly’s proboscis — its feeding tube — is a chemical extraction system of extraordinary sophistication. If it lands on your food and takes something, you indeed cannot retrieve those extracted molecules. The Quran chose the fly with surgical precision.
Now to your specific question: what has science actually achieved in creating atoms, molecules, DNA, RNA, mitochondria — with their functions?

🔬 Level 1: Creating Atoms — Can Science Do This?
Atoms — the fundamental building blocks of all matter — are not created by scientists. They are rearranged, split, or fused, but the atoms themselves pre-exist. Nuclear reactions in particle accelerators can produce new atomic nuclei, but only by using existing matter as input, under conditions that require massive energy infrastructure — and only producing unstable, fleeting elements that decay in microseconds.
Creating an atom from nothing? Never. Not once. Not even theoretically proposed.
The Quran already addressed this: “Allah is the Creator of all things” (Az-Zumar 39:62). Science does not create matter — it rearranges what Allah already created.

🔬 Level 2: Creating DNA and RNA — What Has Science Actually Done?
This is where the story becomes very revealing.
What Scientists Can Do:
DNA and RNA synthesis technologies now allow scientists to design and build genetic material from scratch, enabling breakthroughs in gene therapy, diagnostics, and vaccine development.
This sounds impressive. But here is the critical distinction: scientists synthesise sequences of DNA and RNA — meaning they string together existing chemical building blocks (nucleotides) in a chosen order, like arranging pre-made letters into words. They do not create the nucleotides themselves from non-living chemistry. And crucially — they copy sequences that already exist in nature, or design sequences based on understanding borrowed from existing living systems.
The Venter “Synthetic Cell” — The Most Advanced Attempt:
This is the most celebrated achievement in synthetic biology — often reported as “scientists create life.”
Craig Venter’s team synthesised the 1.08 million base pair chromosome of a modified Mycoplasma mycoides genome. The synthetic cell is proof of principle that genomes can be designed in the computer and chemically made in the laboratory.
What this actually involved:
∙ They took the existing genome of a living bacterium as their template
∙ They chemically reproduced that sequence using existing nucleotide chemicals
∙ They transplanted it into an already existing living cell whose original DNA had been removed
∙ The existing cellular machinery — ribosomes, membranes, enzymes — all pre-existed and were not created by the scientists
Craig Venter himself admitted: “In our final design of this synthetic cell, more than 10% of the genes that are essential for life are of unknown function. That reality somewhat limits what can be done in terms of synthetic genomics. If we can’t design even the smallest organism based on first principles because we don’t know what all the components do, the challenge is greater than we initially thought.”
The world’s most advanced synthetic biologist, after 20 years and $40 million, could not design a living cell from first principles because he does not even understand what 10% of the minimal essential genes do.
The Minimal Cell — 473 Genes, 149 Unknown:
The minimal synthetic bacterial cell JCVI-syn3.0 contains just 473 genes — the smallest genome of any self-replicating organism. Of these genes, 149 are of unknown biological function.
The simplest possible living cell has 473 essential genes. Scientists cannot explain the purpose of 149 of them. They know they are essential — remove them and the cell dies — but they do not know why or how they function.
This is the simplest living thing scientists can conceive of — and nearly a third of its essential machinery is beyond human understanding.

🔬 Level 3: Creating Mitochondria — The Powerhouse Challenge
The mitochondrion is one of the most astonishing structures in biology. It generates ATP — the universal energy currency of all life — through a process called oxidative phosphorylation involving a molecular motor (ATP synthase) that rotates at 9,000 RPM, driven by a proton gradient across a membrane, harvesting energy with extraordinary efficiency.
What Has Science Achieved?
Researchers identified the most promising advancements and greatest challenges of artificial mitochondria. One of the most significant challenges remaining is enabling self-adaptation in changing environments to maintain a stable supply of ATP. Future studies must investigate how to improve upon this limiting feature before synthetic cells are self-sustainable.
Scientists created artificial mitochondria by reprogramming exosomes — tiny vesicles already produced by living cells — to carry ATP-producing enzymes. The artificial organelle could produce some ATP in specific laboratory conditions.
Critical limitations of this achievement:
∙ The enzymes used were extracted from existing living cells — not created from chemistry
∙ The exosomes themselves were produced by living cells — not synthesised from scratch
∙ It functioned only under controlled laboratory conditions — not autonomously
∙ It cannot self-replicate, self-repair, or adapt the way a real mitochondrion does
∙ It is not embedded in a living cellular system that integrates its output
The real mitochondrion does all of this automatically, continuously, responsively, and self-replicates — and it has its own DNA. The artificial version does a pale shadow of one function under idealised conditions.
“If scientists can create artificial mitochondria and chloroplasts, we could potentially develop synthetic cells that can generate energy and synthesize molecules autonomously” — this is still a future aspiration, not a present achievement.

🔬 Level 4: Creating Life from Non-Life — The Absolute Frontier
This is the deepest question — and the most devastating for materialist science.
The transition from non-living to living entities on Earth was not a single event but a process — the transition from non-life to life has never been observed experimentally.
Alexander Oparin’s book The Origin of Life pioneered a scientific approach to these questions — yet 100 years later, scientists are still grappling with the profound question of how life, with its remarkable ability to replicate and evolve, emerged from the chaotic mix of chemical compounds.
The core problem is a chicken-and-egg paradox of breathtaking depth:
∙ DNA contains the instructions for making proteins
∙ Proteins are needed to read and copy DNA
∙ You cannot have DNA without proteins
∙ You cannot have proteins without DNA
∙ Both must exist simultaneously for life to function
∙ No natural process has ever been demonstrated to solve this
“The origin of a whole cell including the DNA, proteins and RNA needed for it to reproduce will never happen by an accident in a chemical soup.” — Even with perfect laboratory conditions, attempts to create a living cell from non-living chemicals have failed.

🔬 Level 5: The Fly’s Wing — The Ultimate Benchmark
Now return to the Quran’s specific challenge. A fly’s wing is not just a physical structure — it is:
∙ An aerodynamic surface generating lift through mechanisms still being reverse-engineered
∙ Constructed from chitin fibres in a precisely engineered lattice
∙ Controlled by flight muscles that fire 200 times per second
∙ Connected to a neurological feedback system that auto-corrects flight 25 times per second
∙ Capable of self-repair through biological processes
∙ Grown from a single fertilised egg through developmental programming of extraordinary complexity
∙ Part of a complete organism that feeds, senses, navigates, reproduces, and evades
Can science create even the wing? Let alone the fly?
The most honest answer is captured in these layers: Challenge Science’s Achievement Gap Remaining Create an atom from nothing ❌ Never attempted Infinite Synthesise DNA from non-living chemistry ❌ Only rearrange existing nucleotides Complete Design a living cell from first principles ❌ Cannot even explain 1/3 of minimal genes Enormous Create functional mitochondria from scratch ❌ Partial mimicry using existing enzymes Vast Produce life from non-life ❌ Never observed, never replicated Absolute Create a fly’s wing with full function ❌ Cannot even begin Incalculable Create a complete fly ❌ Not even theoretically mapped Beyond current science

🌿 The Profound Theological Insight
The Quran’s challenge in Al-Hajj 22:73 is not merely a rhetorical point about idols. It is an eternal epistemological challenge — addressed to every generation, including ours. The 7th century Arabs could not create a fly. The 21st century scientists, with quantum computers, gene sequencers, electron microscopes, and a collective $1 trillion in research funding, still cannot create a fly.
They cannot create its wing. They cannot create its eye. They cannot create its gut bacteria. They cannot explain 149 essential genes in the simplest bacterium. They cannot solve the origin-of-life problem. They cannot transition from non-living chemistry to a living cell under any conditions.
And yet — the fly creates itself from a single fertilised egg, building every structure, wiring every neuron, calibrating every sensor, without any human instruction, guided by information encoded in DNA that science cannot yet fully read.
“We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth.” (Fussilat 41:53)
The more science advances, the more it confirms — not challenges — the Quranic assertion that creation belongs to Allah alone. Every new discovery of biological complexity is another verse of the same message:
لَن يَخْلُقُوا ذُبَابًا وَلَوِ اجْتَمَعُوا لَهُ
“They will never create a fly — even if they all came together for that purpose.” والله أعلم
