CHAPTER 46:Al-Ahqaf

Introduction, Arabic verses, English &urdu translation of the verses, links for Urdu footnotes of explanations

Name:
The name is derived from the phrase in verse 21, idh andhara qawmahu bi’l-aḥqāf (“when he warned his people at Al-Ahqaf”).
Period of Revelation:
This is determined by a historical event mentioned in verses 29–32. The event described in these verses — of the jinn coming and, after listening to the Qur’an, returning [to their people] — occurred, according to the agreed-upon reports of hadith and sirah (prophetic biography), at the time when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was returning from Ta’if to Makkah and had stopped at the place called Nakhlah. According to all reliable historical reports, his journey to Ta’if took place three years before the Hijrah. It is therefore established that this surah was revealed at the end of the 10th year of prophethood, or in the 11th year of prophethood.
Historical Background:
The 10th year of prophethood was an extremely harsh year in the Prophet’s blessed life. For three years, all the tribes of Quraysh had jointly imposed a complete boycott on Banu Hashim and the Muslims, and the Prophet, along with his family and companions, had been confined in Shi’b Abi Talib (Shi’b Abi Talib was the name of a quarter of Makkah where Banu Hashim used to live. Shi’b in Arabic means a mountain pass or ravine. Since this quarter was located in one of the ravines of Mount Abu Qubays, and Abu Talib was the chief of Banu Hashim, it was called Shi’b Abi Talib. This ravine was located near the house that, according to local tradition today, is known as the birthplace of the Prophet. It is now called Shi’b ‘Ali or Shi’b Banu Hashim). The people of Quraysh had blockaded this quarter from every side, so that no kind of supplies could reach inside through it. Only during the season of Hajj could those confined go out and make some purchases. But whenever Abu Lahab saw any of them heading toward the market or toward a trade caravan, he would call out to the merchants and tell them to quote such a high price for whatever they wanted to buy that they would not be able to afford it. This had broken the back of Banu Hashim, and such hard times had passed over them that at times they were reduced to eating grass and leaves.
Somehow, by the grace of God, this siege had only just broken that year when the Prophet’s uncle Abu Talib, who had been a shield for him for ten years, passed away. Scarcely a month had passed after this tragedy when his life companion, Hazrat Khadijah, also passed away — she whose person had been a source of comfort and consolation for him from the beginning of his prophethood until then. Because of these successive shocks and afflictions, the Prophet used to call this year ’Am al-Huzn (the Year of Grief).
After the deaths of Hazrat Khadijah and Abu Talib, the disbelievers of Makkah grew even bolder against the Prophet (peace be upon him). They began to harass him more than before, to the point that it even became difficult for him to leave his house. Ibn Hisham relates an incident from this period: one day, one of the ruffians of Quraysh threw dirt on his head in the middle of the marketplace.
Finally, he went to Ta’if with the intention of inviting the tribe of Banu Thaqif to Islam, and, if they did not accept Islam, at least to persuade them to allow him to work in peace among them. At that time he had no mount available to him at all; he traveled the entire distance from Makkah to Ta’if on foot. According to some reports he went alone, and according to others, only Hazrat Zayd ibn Harithah accompanied him. On arriving there, he stayed for a few days and went to speak individually with the chiefs and notables of Thaqif. But not only did they not accept anything he said, they gave him a clear notice to leave their city, since they feared that his preaching might “corrupt” their youth. He was forced to leave Ta’if. As he was leaving, the chiefs of Thaqif set their local hooligans upon him. They lined both sides of the road for a long distance, jeering at him, cursing him, and pelting him with stones, until he was covered in wounds and his sandals were filled with blood. In this state, he sat down in the shade of a garden wall outside Ta’if and prayed to his Lord:
“O Allah, to You alone I complain of my helplessness, my lack of resources, and my insignificance in the eyes of people. O Most Merciful of the merciful, You are the Lord of all the weak, and You are my Lord too. To whom are You entrusting me? To some stranger who will treat me harshly? Or to some enemy to whom You have given power over me? If You are not angry with me, then I care not [what befalls me], but Your relief would be more spacious for me. I seek refuge in the light of Your countenance, by which all darkness is illuminated and the affairs of this world and the next are set right, that Your wrath should not descend upon me, or that I should not become deserving of Your displeasure. I remain content with Your pleasure until You are pleased. There is no power and no strength except with You.” (Ibn Hisham, vol. 2, p. 62)
Heartbroken and grieving, as he made his way back and approached Qarn al-Manazil, he sensed that a cloud seemed to have gathered overhead. Looking up, he saw Gabriel (peace be upon him) before him. Gabriel called out, “Allah has heard what your people said to you in reply. He has now sent the angel who governs the mountains; you may command him as you wish.” Then the angel of the mountains greeted him and said, “If you command, I will crush these people between the two mountains on either side.” He replied, “No — rather, I hope that Allah will bring forth from their descendants people who will worship Allah alone, without partner.” (Bukhari, Bad’ al-Khalq, Dhikr al-Mala’ikah; Muslim, Kitab al-Maghazi; Nasa’i, al-Bu’uth)
After this, he stopped for a few days at the place called Nakhlah, troubled about how he would now return to Makkah. News of what had happened at Ta’if would surely have reached there by now, and after this the disbelievers would become even bolder than before. During these days, one night while he was reciting the Qur’an in prayer, a group of jinn happened to pass by. They heard the Qur’an, believed, and returned to their own people to begin preaching Islam. And Allah gave His Prophet this good news: even though human beings might be fleeing from his message, many jinn had become devoted to it and were spreading it among their own kind.
Subject Matter and Themes:
These were the circumstances in which this surah was revealed. Anyone who considers these circumstances of revelation on the one hand, and carefully reads this surah on the other, will have no doubt that this is indeed not the speech of Muhammad (peace be upon him), but rather “its revelation is from Allah, the Almighty, the Wise.” For from beginning to end, throughout the entire surah, there is not the slightest trace of those human emotions and impressions that would naturally arise in a person going through such circumstances. Had this been the speech of Muhammad (peace be upon him) — who had been reduced to the depths of exhaustion by an overwhelming succession of shocks and afflictions, capped by the very recent wound of Ta’if — then somewhere in this surah we would surely see a reflection of the feelings passing through his heart at that time. Above, we have quoted the Prophet’s own prayer — look at it. That is his own speech. Every word of it is saturated with those emotions. But this surah, which was uttered by his own blessed tongue in that very period and under those very circumstances, is entirely free of any trace of them.
The subject of this surah is to warn the disbelievers of the consequences of the misguided ways in which they were not only immersed, but upon which they were persistently and arrogantly fixed with great insistence and pride — while, in turn, they made a target of reproach the very person who was striving to rescue them from these errors. In their view, the world was merely a purposeless toy, and within it they regarded themselves as beings not accountable to anyone. The call to monotheism seemed false to them, and they insisted that their deities were indeed partners of God. They were unwilling to accept that the Qur’an was the speech of the Lord of the worlds. They held a strange, ignorant conception of prophethood in their minds, and on this basis they were proposing all sorts of peculiar standards for judging Muhammad’s (peace be upon him) claim to prophethood. In their view, one major proof that Islam was not true was that their elders, the great tribal chiefs, and the wise leaders of their people were not accepting it, and only a few young men, a few poor people, and a few slaves had believed in it. They regarded the Resurrection, life after death, and reward and punishment as a fabricated tale, believing that the occurrence of these things was impossible.
This surah, in brief, provides a reasoned refutation of each of these errors, one by one, and warns the disbelievers that if, instead of trying to understand the truth through reason and evidence, they persist in rejecting the call of the Qur’an and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him) out of prejudice and stubbornness, they will only bring about their own ruin.

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Ha, Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
We did not create the heavens and earth and what is between them except in truth and [for] a specified term. But those who disbelieve, from that of which they are warned, are turning away.
Say, “Have you considered that which you invoke besides Allah? Show me what they have created of the earth, or do they have a share in [the creation of] the heavens? Bring me a scripture [revealed] before this or a trace of [prior] knowledge, if you should be truthful.” And who is more astray than one who invokes besides Allah those who will not respond to him until the Day of Resurrection, and they, of their invocation, are unaware. And when the people are gathered [that Day], they [who were invoked] will be enemies to them, and they will be deniers of their worship.
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say of the truth when it has come to them, “This is obvious magic.” Or do they say, “He has invented it”? Say, “If I have invented it, you have no power to protect me from Allah at all. He is most knowing of that in which you are engaged. Sufficient is He as Witness between me and you, and He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
Say, “I am not something original among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you. I only follow that which is revealed to me, and I am not but a clear warner.” Say, “Have you considered: if it is from Allah and you disbelieved in it while a witness from the Children of Israel has testified to something similar and believed while you were arrogant, [then are you not unjust]? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.“

Al-Ahqaf, verses 11–20):
And those who disbelieved say of those who believed, “If it had been good, they would not have preceded us to it.” And when they are not guided by it, they will say, “This is an ancient falsehood.” And before it was the scripture of Moses to lead and as a mercy. And this is a confirming Book in an Arabic tongue to warn those who have wronged and as good tidings to the doers of good. Indeed, those who have said, “Our Lord is Allah” and then remained on a right course — there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve. Those are the companions of Paradise, abiding eternally therein as reward for what they used to do.
And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents. His mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship, and his gestation and weaning is thirty months. [He grows] until, when he reaches maturity and reaches forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have turned to You in repentance, and indeed, I am of the Muslims.” Those are the ones from whom We will accept the best of what they did and overlook their misdeeds, [their being] among the companions of Paradise, a promise of truth which they had been promised. But one who says to his parents, “Uff to you, do you promise me that I will be brought forth [from the earth] when generations before me have already passed on [into oblivion]?” while they call to Allah for help [and to their son], “Woe to you, believe! Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.” But he says, “This is not except legends of the former peoples” — those are the ones upon whom the word has come into effect, among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they were losers.
And for all there are degrees [of reward and punishment] for what they did, so that He may fully compensate them for their deeds, and they will not be wronged. And on the Day the disbelievers are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], “You exhausted your pleasures during your worldly life and enjoyed them, so today you will be recompensed with a punishment of humiliation for what you used to boast about upon the earth without right and because you were defiantly disobedient.“

Al-Ahqaf, verses 21–26):
And mention the brother of ’Aad, when he warned his people at Al-Ahqaf — and warners had already passed on before him and after him — [saying], “Worship none but Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a terrible day.” They said, “Have you come to delude us away from our gods? Then bring us what you promise us, if you are of the truthful.” He said, “The knowledge [of its time] is only with Allah, and I convey to you that with which I was sent, but I see you as a people behaving ignorantly.” Then, when they saw it as a cloud approaching their valleys, they said, “This is a cloud bringing us rain.” Rather, it is that for which you were impatient: a wind, within it a painful punishment, destroying everything by command of its Lord. And they became so that nothing was to be seen [there] except their dwellings. Thus do We recompense the criminal people. And We had certainly established them in such as We have not established you, and We had made for them hearing and vision and hearts. But their hearing, vision, and hearts availed them not at all since they were [continually] rejecting the signs of Allah; and they were enveloped by what they used to ridicule.

Al-Ahqaf, verses 27–35, concluding the surah):
And We have already destroyed cities around you, and We had diversified the signs [or verses] that perhaps they might return [from disbelief]. Then why did those they took besides Allah as deities by which to approach Him not aid them? But they had strayed from them. And that was their falsehood and what they were inventing.
And [mention, O Muhammad], when We directed to you a few of the jinn, listening to the Qur’an. And when they attended it, they said, “Listen quietly.” And when it was concluded, they went back to their people as warners. They said, “O our people, indeed we have heard a scripture revealed after Moses confirming what was before it which guides to the truth and to a straight path. O our people, respond to the caller of Allah and believe in him; Allah will forgive for you some of your sins and protect you from a painful punishment.” But he who does not respond to the caller of Allah will not cause failure [to Allah] on earth, and he will not have besides Him any protectors. Those are in manifest error.
Have they not considered that Allah, who created the heavens and earth and did not fail in their creation, is able to give life to the dead? Yes. Indeed, He is over all things competent. And the Day the disbelievers are exposed to the Fire [it will be said], “Is this not the truth?” They will say, “Yes, by our Lord.” He will say, “Then taste the punishment for what you used to deny.”
So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. It will be, on the Day they see that which they are promised, as though they had not remained [in the world] except an hour of a day. This is notification. And will [any] be destroyed except the defiantly disobedient people?
