Name:
Derived from the phrase in verse 28, “wa tara kulla ummatin jāthiyah” (and you will see every nation kneeling). It means “the Surah in which the word Jathiyah (kneeling) occurs.”
Period of Revelation:
The period of revelation of this Surah is also not stated in any reliable tradition. But from its themes, it is clearly felt that this Surah was revealed close in time after Surah Ad-Dukhan. There is such a resemblance between the themes of the two Surahs that they appear to be twins.
Subject and Topics:
Its subject is to answer the doubts and objections of the disbelievers of Makkah regarding monotheism (Tawheed) and the Hereafter, and to warn them about the attitude they had adopted in opposing the message of the Qur’an.
The discourse begins with arguments for monotheism. In this connection, pointing to the countless signs spread everywhere—from man’s own existence to the earth and sky—it is explained that wherever you raise your eyes and look, everything bears witness to the very oneness of God which you are refusing to accept. These various kinds of animals, this night and day, these rains and the vegetation that grows from them, these winds, and man’s own creation—if a person looks at all these things with open eyes and, without any bias, uses his reason properly to reflect on them, then these signs are entirely sufficient to convince him that this universe does not lack a God, nor is it being run under the godhood of many gods, but rather one God alone has made it, and He alone is its Administrator and Ruler. Except, of course, for one who has sworn not to believe, or has already decided to remain mired in doubts and suspicions. Such a person can never obtain the wealth of certainty and faith from anywhere in the world.
Going further, at the beginning of the second ruku’, it is again said that all the countless things man makes use of in this world, and the innumerable objects and forces serving his interests in this universe, did not simply come from nowhere on their own, nor did goddesses and gods supply them; rather, it is the one God who has granted all this from Himself and subjected it for man’s benefit. If a person reflects properly, his own reason will cry out that it is that same God who is man’s Benefactor, and that it is His right that man should be grateful to Him.
After this, the disbelievers of Makkah are severely reproached for the obstinacy, arrogance, mockery, and persistence in disbelief with which they were opposing the call of the Qur’an, and they are warned that this Qur’an has brought the very same blessing that was earlier given to the Children of Israel, by virtue of which they had become deserving of superiority over all other nations. When they failed to appreciate this blessing and lost it through sectarian disputes in religion, this treasure has now been sent to you. This is a guide that shows man the clear highway of religion. Those who reject it out of their ignorance and foolishness will only be preparing their own destruction. And only those people will deserve God’s support and mercy who accept its guidance and establish themselves firmly on the path of piety (taqwa).
In this connection, the followers of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) are instructed to overlook and bear patiently the foolish behavior that these people, who have no fear of God, are directing at them. If they show patience, God Himself will deal with these people and will reward them for their patience.
Then the ignorant beliefs of the disbelievers concerning the doctrine of the Hereafter are addressed. They used to say that life is only this worldly life, and there is no life after it. We die simply through the passage of days, just as a clock stops after running for a while. They claimed no soul remains after death to be seized and later brought back and breathed into a human body again. If you claim this, they said, then bring our dead forefathers back to life and show us. In response, Allah Almighty presents several arguments one after another:
First, that you are not saying this on the basis of any knowledge; rather, you have passed such a huge judgment merely on the basis of conjecture. Do you really have the knowledge that there is no other life after death and that souls are not seized but rather perish entirely?
Second, that the basis of your claim is, at most, simply that you have not seen anyone who died get up and return to the world. Is this enough to make such a huge claim that the dead will never rise again? Does something not appearing in your experience and observation mean that you have knowledge of its non-existence?
Third, that it is utterly against reason and justice that the good and the bad, the obedient and the disobedient, the oppressor and the oppressed, should all end up the same in the end—that no good deed should have any good result and no evil deed any evil result, that no wronged person should get justice and no oppressor should be punished for what he did, but that all should meet the very same fate. Whoever has formed this concept about God’s universe has formed a thoroughly wrong concept. The unjust and wicked adopt this notion because they do not wish to see the evil consequences of their deeds, but God’s kingdom is not a lawless jungle; rather, it is a true and just system in which it can never happen that the good and the bad are unjustly made equal in the end.
Fourth, that the belief in denying the Hereafter is extremely destructive for morality. Only those adopt it who have become slaves to their own base desires, and they adopt it so that they may have free rein to follow those desires. Then, once they adopt this belief, it leads them further and further astray, until their moral sense becomes completely dead and every door of guidance closes upon them.
After presenting these arguments, Allah Almighty declares with full force that just as you did not come to life on your own but were given life by Us, similarly you do not die on your own but die when We cause you to die, and a time will certainly come when all of you will be gathered together at once. If you do not believe this today out of your ignorance and foolishness, then do not believe it — but when that time comes, you will see with your own eyes that you have been brought before your Lord, and your complete record of deeds is ready without the slightest omission, bearing witness to every single one of your actions. At that time you will realize just how costly this denial of the Hereafter and this mockery you have been making of it has turned out to be for you.

Bismillāh-ir-Raḥmān-ir-Raḥīm (In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)
Ḥā. Mīm. The revelation of this Book is from Allah, the Almighty, the All-Wise. (1)
The truth is that in the heavens and the earth there are countless signs for those who believe. (2) And in your own creation, and in the animals which Allah is spreading (over the earth), there are great signs for people who have certainty of faith. (3) And in the alternation of night and day, (4) and in the sustenance which Allah sends down from the sky, and thereby revives the dead earth, (5-6) and in the circulation of the winds, (7) there are many signs for people who use their reason. These are Allah’s signs which We are stating to you exactly as they are. Now, after Allah and His revelations, what other statement is there that these people will believe in? (8)
Destruction awaits every lying, evildoing person before whom Allah’s revelations are recited and who hears them, yet persists in his disbelief with utter arrogance, as if he had never heard them at all. (9) Give such a person the good news of a painful punishment. When any part of Our revelations comes to his knowledge, he turns it into a joke. (10) For all such people there is a humiliating punishment. Ahead of them lies Hell. (11) Nothing of what they earned in the world will be of any use to them, nor will those protectors whom they took as guardians besides Allah be able to do anything for them. (12) For them there is a great punishment.
This Qur’an is guidance through and through, and for those who have refused to accept the revelations of their Lord there is a most painful punishment.

It is Allah alone who has subjected the sea for you, so that ships may sail upon it by His command, (13) and so that you may seek His bounty (14) and be grateful. He has subjected for you everything in the earth and in the heavens, (15) all of it from Himself. (16) In this there are great signs for people who reflect and ponder. (17)
O Prophet, tell the believers to overlook the conduct of those who have no fear of the evil days coming from Allah, (18) so that Allah Himself may repay a people for what they earned. (19) Whoever does a good deed does it for his own benefit, and whoever does evil will bear its consequences himself. Then all are to return to their Lord.
Before this, We gave the Children of Israel the Book, sound judgment, (20) and Prophethood. We blessed them with good provisions of life, granted them superiority over all the peoples of the world, (21) and gave them clear guidance in matters of religion. Then the differences that arose among them arose (not out of ignorance but) after knowledge had come to them, and they arose because they wished to wrong one another. (22) Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning the matters in which they used to differ. After this, O Prophet, We have now established you on a clear highway (Shariah) in the matter of religion. (23) So follow it, and do not follow the desires of those who have no knowledge. They can be of no avail to you at all against Allah. (24) The wrongdoers are allies of one another, while the ally of the God-fearing is Allah Himself. These are lights of insight for all people, and guidance and mercy for those who have certainty of faith. (25)
Do those who have committed evil deeds think (26) that We will make them equal to those who believe and do righteous deeds, so that their living and dying should become the same? Very evil indeed is the judgment they make. (27)

Allah has created the heavens and the earth with truth, (28) and has done so in order that every soul may be repaid for what it has earned. No injustice at all will be done to anyone. (29)
Have you then ever considered the case of the one who has taken his own desire as his god, (30) and whom Allah has cast into misguidance despite knowledge, (31) and has sealed his heart and his ears, and placed a veil over his eyes? (32) Who, after Allah, can then guide him? Will you people not take any lesson? (33)
These people say: “There is nothing but this life of ours in this world; here we live and die, and nothing destroys us except the passage of time.” In reality, they have no knowledge of this matter. They say this merely on the basis of conjecture. (34) And when Our clear revelations are recited to them, (35) they have no argument except to say: “Bring back our forefathers, if you are truthful.” (36) O Prophet, say to them: It is Allah who gives you life, and then He alone gives you death. (37) Then He alone will gather you together on the Day of Resurrection, about the coming of which there is no doubt, (38) but most people do not know. (39)

To Allah alone belongs the dominion of the earth and the heavens, (40) and on the day the Hour arrives, the followers of falsehood will fall into loss.
At that time you will see every group fallen on its knees. (41) Every group will be called upon to come and see its record of deeds. It will be said: “Today you will be repaid for the deeds you used to do. This is Our record, prepared for you, which bears true witness against you — whatever you were doing, We kept having it written down.” (42) Then those who believed and kept doing righteous deeds will be admitted by their Lord into His mercy, and that is manifest success. And those who disbelieved will be told: “Were My revelations not recited to you? But you were arrogant (43) and remained wrongdoers. And when it was said that Allah’s promise is true and there is no doubt about the coming of the Hour, you used to say: ‘We do not know what the Hour is; we only have a vague conjecture, we have no certainty.’” (44) At that time the evils of their deeds will become manifest to them, (45) and they will be overtaken by the very thing they used to mock. And it will be said to them: “Today We forget you just as you forgot the meeting of this Day. Your abode now is Hell, and there is no helper for you. This end of yours has come about because you took Allah’s revelations as a joke, and the life of this world deceived you. So today they will neither be brought out of Hell, nor will they be asked to make amends to please their Lord.” (46)
So all praise belongs to Allah, the Owner of the earth and the heavens, and the Lord of all the worlds. To Him alone belongs greatness in the earth and the heavens, and He alone is the Almighty, the All-Wise.
