The name is derived from the phrase in verse 4, inna alladhīna yunādūnaka min warā’i al-ḥujurāt (“those who call out to you from behind the private chambers”). It means: the surah in which the word al-Ḥujurāt (the private chambers/apartments) occurs.
Period of Revelation:
Both the traditions (riwayat) and the contents of the surah confirm that it is a collection of commands and instructions revealed on different occasions, which have been brought together on account of their thematic relevance. The traditions further indicate that most of these commands were revealed in the final period of the Prophet’s life in Madinah. For example, regarding verse 4, the commentators state that it was revealed concerning the Banu Tamim, whose delegation came and began calling out to the Prophet (peace be upon him) from outside the apartments of the Mothers of the Believers — and all the books of biography (Sirah) place the arrival of this delegation in 9 AH. Similarly, numerous hadith traditions indicate that verse 6 was revealed concerning Walid ibn ’Uqbah, whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had sent to collect zakat from the Banu al-Mustaliq — and it is known that Walid ibn ’Uqbah embraced Islam at the time of the Conquest of Makkah.
Subject Matter and Themes:
The theme of this surah is to teach Muslims the manners befitting people of faith. In the first five verses, they are taught the etiquette they must observe in their conduct toward Allah and His Messenger. They are then instructed that it is not proper to believe every report and act upon it without verification. If information is received against any person, group, or nation, one should carefully consider whether the source of the information is reliable. If it is not reliable, one should investigate whether the report is true before acting upon it. Next, it is explained how other Muslims should act if two groups of Muslims come to fight one another. Muslims are then admonished to avoid those vices that create corruption in collective life and damage mutual relations — mocking one another, taunting one another, giving each other bad names, harboring ill suspicions, prying into others’ affairs, and backbiting. These are acts that are sinful in themselves and also breed corruption in society; Allah has named them individually and declared them forbidden. After this, a blow is struck against tribal and racial prejudices, which are a source of widespread corruption in the world. Pride and arrogance of nations, tribes, and families over their lineage, looking down on others as inferior, and belittling others in order to establish one’s own superiority — these are among the major causes that have filled the world with injustice. Allah has cut off the root of this evil with a brief verse, declaring that all human beings originate from a single source, and that their division into nations and tribes is meant for mutual recognition, not for boasting; and that there is no legitimate basis for the superiority of one human being over another except moral excellence. Finally, people are told that the real thing is not a verbal claim of faith but sincerely believing in Allah and His Messenger from the heart, living in practical obedience, and devoting one’s life and wealth wholeheartedly in the way of Allah. True believers are only those who adopt this way of life. As for those who merely profess Islam with their tongues without inner conviction, and then behave as though they have done a favor by accepting Islam — they may be counted among Muslims in worldly terms, and society may treat them accordingly, but in the sight of Allah they cannot be regarded as true believers.

Here is the English translation of this passage (Surah Al-Hujurat, verses 1–10):
O you who have believed, do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you speak loudly to one another, lest your deeds become worthless without your even realizing it. Indeed, those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allah are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and a great reward.
O Prophet, most of those who call out to you from behind the private chambers lack understanding. Had they been patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
O you who have believed, if a wicked person brings you a report, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then become regretful for what you have done. And know that among you is the Messenger of Allah. If he were to obey you in many matters, you would surely fall into hardship. But Allah has endeared faith to you and made it pleasing in your hearts, and has made disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience hateful to you. Such are those who are rightly guided — by the grace and favor of Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
And if two factions among the believers fight, then make peace between them. But if one of them transgresses against the other, then fight the transgressing party until it returns to the command of Allah. If it returns, then make peace between them with justice, and act fairly — indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. The believers are but brothers, so make peace between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy.

Here is the English translation of this passage (continuing Surah Al-Hujurat, verses 11–18):
O you who have believed, let not men mock other men; perhaps they may be better than them. Nor let women mock other women; perhaps they may be better than them. Do not taunt one another, nor call one another by offensive nicknames. Wretched is the name of wickedness after [one’s entrance into] faith. And whoever does not repent — it is they who are the wrongdoers.
O you who have believed, avoid much suspicion, for indeed some suspicion is sin. Do not spy on one another, nor let any of you backbite another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.
O mankind, We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes so that you may know one another. Indeed, the most honored of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
The bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say to them, “You have not [yet] believed; but say instead, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts. But if you obey Allah and His Messenger, He will not deprive you of anything of your deeds. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then have not doubted, and who have striven with their wealth and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is they who are the truthful.
Say, “Are you informing Allah of your religion, while Allah knows whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is Knowing of all things?” They consider it a favor to you that they have accepted Islam. Say, “Do not consider your Islam a favor to me. Rather, Allah has conferred favor upon you that He has guided you to faith, if you should be truthful [in your claim].” Indeed, Allah knows the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is Seeing of what you do.
