Is it then possible that the person who knows this Book which your Lord has sent down to you to be the truth, and the person who is blind to this reality, could be equal? 35,Only people of understanding take heed 36. And their way is this: they fulfill their covenant with Allah and do not break it after having bound themselves firmly to it 37.

Their conduct is such that they maintain those bonds and relationships which Allah has commanded to be maintained 38; they fear their Lord and dread the possibility of a severe reckoning. Their state is such that they remain steadfast in seeking their Lord’s pleasure,39 establish Prayer, spend out of what We have provided them, both openly and secretly, and repel evil with good 40. For such people is the reward of the Final Abode — everlasting gardens which they will enter, along with the righteous among their forefathers, their spouses, and their offspring. Angels will come to welcome them from every side, saying, “Peace be upon you!41. This is your reward today for the patience you observed” — how excellent is this Final Abode!

As for those who break Allah’s covenant after having bound themselves firmly to it, who sever the bonds that Allah has commanded to be joined, and who spread corruption in the earth — upon them is the curse, and theirs is the most evil abode in the Hereafter.

Allah grants abundant provision to whomever He wills, and gives in due measure to whomever He wills 42. These people are engrossed in the life of this world, whereas the life of this world, compared with the Hereafter, is nothing but a fleeting enjoyment. [Section 3]

Footnote 35:

That is, those who accept this teaching sent by Allah and this call of Allah’s Messenger are not blind of reason, but rather alert, perceptive people who possess understanding. And thereafter their character and conduct in this world take on the color, and their end in the Hereafter takes the form, described in the verses that follow.

That is, neither can their conduct in this world be the same, nor can their end in the Hereafter be the same.

Footnote 36: That is, those who accept this teaching sent by Allah and this call of Allah’s Messenger are not blind of reason, but rather alert, perceptive people who possess understanding. And thereafter their character and conduct in this world take on the color, and their end in the Hereafter takes the form, described in the verses that follow.

Footnote 37:

This refers to that primordial covenant which Allah Almighty took from all mankind at the very beginning of creation, that they would worship Him alone (for an explanation, see Surah Al-A’raf, footnotes 134 and 135). This covenant has been taken from every human being; it lies embedded in everyone’s nature, and it becomes firmly established the moment a person comes into being through Allah’s creation and is nurtured through His providence. Being sustained by Allah’s provision, making use of the things He has created, and employing the faculties He has bestowed, automatically binds a person to a covenant of servitude with God — a covenant which no person of understanding and gratitude can dare to break, except that he may occasionally, and unknowingly, slip into some lapse.

Footnote 38:

That is, all those social and civilizational bonds upon whose soundness the welfare and well-being of man’s collective life depends.

Footnote 39:

That is, they keep their desires under control, bind their emotions and inclinations within limits, do not slip when they see the benefits and pleasures that beckon toward disobeying Allah, and endure the losses and hardships they fear in obeying Allah. In this sense, the believer’s entire life is, in truth, a life of patience, for in hope of Allah’s pleasure and in expectation of the lasting rewards of the Hereafter, he exercises self-restraint in this world and patiently resists every inclination of his soul toward sin.

Footnote 40:

That is, they do not repay evil with evil but with good. They do not confront wrong with wrong but with what is right. However much someone wrongs them, they respond not with wrongdoing but with justice. However much someone lies about them, they respond with truth. However much someone betrays their trust, they respond with honesty. It is in this sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: do not be mere followers of the crowd, saying that if people do good we will do good and if they wrong us we will wrong them; rather, train yourselves so that if people do good you do good, and if they do evil, you do not commit injustice. It is in this same sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that his Lord commanded him with nine things, four of which were: that he should speak justly whether pleased or angry, that he should give the due of one who withholds his due from him, that he should give to one who deprives him, and that he should forgive one who wrongs him. And it is in this sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not betray one who betrays you.” And it is in this sense that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The best way to punish one who does not fear God in his dealings with you is to deal with him while fearing God yourself.”

Footnote 41:

This does not merely mean that angels will come from every side to greet them with peace; it also means that the angels will give them the good news that they have now arrived at a place where there is nothing but peace and security for them — where they are now safe from every calamity, every hardship, every toil, and every danger and fear. (For further detail, see Surah Al-Hijr, footnote 29.)

Footnote 42:

The background of this verse is that the disbelievers of Mecca, like ignorant people in general, judged the worth of human beings not by the goodness or badness of their beliefs and deeds, but by their wealth or poverty. They supposed that whoever was enjoying abundant comfort in this world was beloved of God, however misguided and wicked he might be, and that whoever was in straitened circumstances was under God’s displeasure, however righteous he might be. On this basis they gave preference to the chiefs of the Quraysh over the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) poor companions, saying, “Look, and see with whom Allah is.” In response, it is being pointed out that the matter of abundance or scarcity of provision is governed by a wholly different law of Allah’s, under which, for the sake of countless other wise purposes, more is given to some and less to others. This is no criterion by which to judge the moral and spiritual worth of human beings. The true basis of distinction among human beings, and the real criterion of their felicity or wretchedness, is who has adopted the right path of thought and action and who the wrong one, who has acquired good qualities and who bad ones. But foolish people, instead of looking at this, look only at who has received more wealth and who less.
