Ask them: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah. Then say to them: Since this is the truth, have you taken, besides Him, protectors who have no power even to benefit or harm themselves? Say: Can the blind and the seeing be equal? Or can light and darkness be alike? Or have the partners they have set up with Allah created anything like His creation, so that creation itself has become confused for them? Say: Allah alone is the Creator of everything, and He is the One, the Supreme, the Irresistible!
EXPLANATIRY FOOTNOTES
Footnote 26:
It should be noted that these people themselves believed that Allah is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. They could not answer this question with a denial, since such a denial would itself contradict their own belief. Yet when the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them, they also shrank from answering in the affirmative, since acknowledging it would necessitate accepting Tawhid, leaving no reasonable basis remaining for shirk. Therefore, sensing the weakness of their position, they would fall silent in response to this question. This is why, at various places in the Qur’an, Allah Almighty tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) to ask them: Who is the Creator of the heavens and the earth? Who is the Lord of the universe? Who provides you with sustenance? He then commands him to answer himself, “Allah,” and thereupon argues: since all these matters belong to Allah, then who, after all, are these others whom you are worshipping?
Footnote 27:
By “the blind” is meant a person before whom the signs and evidences of Allah’s Oneness are spread out on every side in the universe, yet he sees none of them. And by “the seeing” is meant one for whom the registers of knowledge of the Creator lie open in every atom and every leaf of the universe. The meaning of Allah Almighty’s question is: O you who are blind of reason! If you yourselves cannot see, then how could one who possesses sight put out his own eyes? How could it be possible for someone who sees reality plainly before him to go stumbling about like you people devoid of insight?
Footnote 28:
By “light” is meant that light of true knowledge which was granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his followers. And by “darkness” is meant the darkness of ignorance in which the deniers were wandering astray. The meaning of the question is: how can one who has already received light agree to extinguish his own lamp and go stumbling about in darkness? If you do not appreciate the worth of light, so be it. But one who has already attained it, who has come to know the difference between light and darkness, who clearly sees the straight path in the light of day — how could he possibly be willing to abandon that light and wander lost in darkness?
Footnote 29:
The meaning of this question is: had some things in the world been created by Allah and others by someone else, and had it been difficult to determine which was Allah’s creative work and which belonged to others, then indeed there might have been some reasonable basis for shirk. But when these polytheists themselves admit that not one of their deities has created so much as a straw or a single hair, and when they themselves concede that these false gods have not the slightest share in creation, then on what basis have these false deities been made partners in the Creator’s authority and rights?
Footnote 30:
The word actually used is “Qahhar,” meaning “the One Who, by His own power, exercises command over all and holds all in subjection.” The statement that “Allah alone is the Creator of everything” is a reality acknowledged by the polytheists themselves, which they never denied. And the statement that “He is One and Supreme” is the necessary consequence of this acknowledged reality, which no rational person, having accepted the first reality, can possibly deny. For whoever is the Creator of everything is necessarily One and Unique, since everything else is His creation — how, then, could any creature share with its Creator in His Being, His attributes, His powers, or His rights? Likewise, He is necessarily Supreme, since a creature’s being subjected to its creator is inherent in the very concept of createdness. If the Creator did not possess complete dominance, how could He create at all? Thus, for one who acknowledges Allah as Creator, it becomes impossible to deny these two purely rational and logical conclusions, and it becomes altogether unreasonable for anyone to abandon the Creator to worship a creature, or to abandon the Supreme to call upon the subjugated for the removal of difficulties.
