بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

الٓـمّٓرٰ ۟ تِلۡکَ اٰیٰتُ الۡکِتٰبِ ؕ وَ الَّذِیۡۤ اُنۡزِلَ اِلَیۡکَ مِنۡ رَّبِّکَ الۡحَقُّ وَ لٰکِنَّ اَکۡثَرَ النَّاسِ لَا یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ ﴿۱﴾

ا۔ل۔م۔ر، یہ کتاب الہٰی کی آیات ہیں، اور جو کچھ تمہارے ربّ کی طرف سے تم پر نازل کیا گیا ہے وہ عین حق ہے، مگر ﴿تمہاری قوم کے﴾ اکثر لوگ مان نہیں رہے ہیں۔¹

Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra. These are the verses of the Divine Book; and what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the very truth, but most people ⟨of your nation⟩ do not believe.

This is the preamble of the surah, in which the purpose of the discourse is stated in a few words. The address is directed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and Allah Almighty says to him: O Prophet, most of your people are refusing to accept this teaching, but the fact is that We have sent it down to you, and this is the truth, whether people believe it or not. After this brief preamble, the main discourse begins, in which an attempt is made to explain to the deniers why this teaching is true and how mistaken their attitude toward it is. To understand this discourse, it is essential to bear in mind from the very outset that what the Prophet (peace be upon him) was inviting people to at that time consisted of three fundamental points. First, that all godhood belongs entirely to Allah, and therefore no one besides Him is deserving of worship and servitude. Second, that after this life there is another life in which you will have to answer for your deeds. Third, that I am Allah’s Messenger, and whatever I am presenting is not from myself but from Allah. These are the three points which people were refusing to accept, and it is these very points that this discourse repeatedly attempts to explain in various ways, and it is regarding these same points that people’s doubts and objections are addressed and removed.
