It is Allah alone Who raised the heavens without any such visible supports (2), and then established Himself upon His Throne of authority (3), and Who subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course under a fixed law (4). Everything in this entire system moves on to an appointed term (5), and Allah alone is managing the whole affair. He explains His signs in detail (6), so that you may become certain of meeting your Lord (7).

And He is the One Who spread out this earth, set up mountains in it like pegs, and made rivers flow. He created every kind of fruit in pairs, and He is the One Who causes the night to cover the day (8). Surely in all these things there are great signs for people who reflect.

And behold, in the earth there are separate tracts of land lying adjacent to one another (9). There are vineyards, cultivated fields, and date palms — some growing in clusters and some standing alone (10). All of them are watered by the same water, yet We make some of them excel others in taste. Surely in all these things there are many signs for people who use their reason (11)

Footnote 2:

In other words, He established the heavens on supports that are imperceptible and invisible. Apparently there is nothing in the vast expanse of space that is holding up these countless celestial bodies. Yet there is an unseen power that keeps each one fixed in its position and orbit, preventing these immense bodies from falling onto the earth or onto one another.

Footnote 3:

For an explanation of this, see Surah Al-A’raf, footnote 41. Briefly, it suffices here to point out that wherever the Qur’an mentions Allah’s being seated in majesty upon the Throne (i.e., the center of command over the universe), the purpose stated is that Allah has not merely created this universe but is Himself ruling and governing this kingdom. This world of existence is not a self-running machine, as many ignorant people imagine, nor is it the domain of multiple gods, as many other ignorant people suppose; rather, it is an orderly system which its Creator Himself is running.

Footnote 4:

Here it should be kept in mind that the audience being addressed did not deny Allah’s existence, nor did they deny that He was the Creator, nor did they suppose that the affairs described here belonged to anyone other than Allah. Therefore, no need was felt to argue the point that it is indeed Allah who established the heavens and who has subjected the sun and moon to a fixed law. Rather, these facts, which the addressees themselves accepted, are put forward as evidence for a different point — namely, that besides Allah there is no other holder of authority in this cosmic system who deserves to be worshipped as a deity. As for the question of how this argument could be useful against someone who denies Allah’s existence and His being the Creator and Sustainer altogether — the answer is that the very arguments Allah presents to establish His Oneness against polytheists are also sufficient to establish His existence against atheists. The entire argument for Tawhid rests on the fact that the whole universe, from the earth to the heavens, is one complete system, and this entire system runs under one mighty law, in which everywhere are visible the marks of an all-encompassing authority, flawless wisdom, and unerring knowledge. These signs point, on the one hand, to the fact that this system does not have many rulers, and on the other, that it does have one Ruler. Only a person who is stubbornly obstinate, or one whose reason has been overcome, could conceive of order without an orderer, law without a lawgiver, wisdom without a wise being, knowledge without a knower, and above all, creation without a Creator.

Footnote 5:

That is, this system is not merely testifying that one all-encompassing authority rules over it and that a mighty wisdom is at work within it; rather, all its parts and all the forces working within them also bear witness that nothing in this system is everlasting. Everything has an appointed time until which it runs its course, and when its time is completed, it perishes. This is true of every single component of this system, and it is equally true of the system as a whole. The overall structure of this physical universe indicates that it is not eternal and everlasting; a time is fixed for it too, when it will come to an end and another world will be established in its place. Therefore, the coming of the Last Hour, of which news has been given, is not something improbable — rather, its not coming would be improbable.

Footnote 6:

That is, signs indicating that the realities which the Messenger of Allah is announcing are in fact true realities. Everywhere in the universe there exist traces bearing witness to them. If people were to open their eyes and look, they would see that the countless signs spread across the earth and heavens confirm the very things the Qur’an calls upon them to believe in.

Footnote 7:

The testimony of the cosmic signs mentioned above to the fact that this world has one Creator and Sustainer is quite evident and open. But the fact that these same signs also testify to the truth of what the Messenger of Allah has announced regarding the second life after death, man’s appearance before the divine court, and reward and punishment, is somewhat less obvious and becomes clear only with deeper reflection. That is why there was no need to draw special attention to the first reality, since a listener could grasp what is proved merely by hearing the arguments. The second reality, however, has been specifically highlighted — that certainty of meeting your Lord, too, can be attained by reflecting on these very signs.

The above-mentioned signs establish the truth of the Hereafter in two ways:

First, when we reflect on the structure of the heavens and the subjection of the sun and moon, our hearts bear witness that for the God who created these immense celestial bodies, and whose power keeps such vast spheres revolving in space, it is not at all difficult to bring mankind back to life after death.

Second, this same cosmic system also gives us the testimony that its Creator is supremely wise, and it seems utterly inconceivable, given His wisdom, that after making mankind a rational, conscious creature endowed with will and choice, and after granting them power over countless things on His earth, He would not call them to account for their conduct in life — that He would not question the wrongdoers or redress the wronged, would not reward the righteous or punish the wicked, and would never ask what they did with the precious trusts He placed in their care. A blind king may well hand over the affairs of his kingdom to his officials and remain sunk in heedless slumber, but such carelessness and neglect cannot be expected of one who is wise and knowing.

In this way, the observation of the heavens not only convinces us of the possibility of the Hereafter but also assures us of its certain occurrence.

Footnote 8:

After the celestial bodies, attention is now drawn to the earthly realm, and here too, evidence from the signs of Allah’s power and wisdom is presented for the same two realities (Tawhid and the Hereafter) for which evidence was drawn from the signs of the heavenly realm in the preceding verses. A summary of these arguments is as follows:

(1) The relationship of the earth with the celestial bodies, the relationship of the sun and moon with the earth, and the relationship of the mountains and rivers with the needs of the earth’s countless creatures — all these things bear clear witness that they were neither made by separate gods, nor are they being managed by different powerful deities. Had this been the case, such extensive correspondences, harmonies, and coordinations could never have arisen among all these things, nor could they have continued to persist. How could it have been possible for separate gods to jointly devise such a plan of creation and management for the entire universe, in which every single thing, from the earth to the heavens, remains interconnected with everything else, and in which their respective interests never come into conflict?

(2) The suspension of this magnificent globe of the earth in open space, the rising up of such enormous mountains on its surface, the flowing of such mighty rivers across its breast, the growth of countless varieties of trees in its lap, and the continuous, perfectly regular occurrence of the wondrous phenomena of night and day — all these things bear witness to the power of the God Who created them. To suppose that such an All-Powerful Being cannot give man a new life after death is a mark not of reason and wisdom, but of foolishness and stupidity.

(3) The countless instances of wisdom and purpose found in the structure of the earth, in the formation of mountains upon it, in the arrangement by which rivers flow down from the mountains, in the production of every kind of fruit in pairs, and in the regular succession of day after night and night after day — all these loudly proclaim that the God Who devised this plan of creation is supremely wise. All these things declare that this is neither the work of some purposeless force nor the plaything of some frivolous being. In each and every one of these things, the wisdom of a Wise Being — indeed, the most mature wisdom — can be seen at work. After observing all this, only a foolish person could imagine that, having created man on earth and given him such opportunities for great undertakings, He would simply let him vanish into dust for nothing.

Footnote 9:

That is, He has not made the entire earth uniform; rather, He has created within it countless regions which, despite being contiguous, differ completely from one another in shape, color, composition, properties, powers and capacities, and in their produce and mineral or chemical resources. The creation of these different regions, and the presence within them of all kinds of variations, contains within itself countless instances of wisdom and purpose. Setting aside other creatures and considering only the interests of man, one can appreciate that the correspondences and compatibilities found between man’s various needs and purposes on the one hand, and the diversity of these regions of the earth on the other — and the opportunities this has afforded for human civilization to flourish — are undoubtedly the result of the thought, the deliberate planning, and the wise intention of a Wise Being. Great stubbornness is required to dismiss this as a mere accidental occurrence.

Footnote 10:

Among date palms, there are some whose root sends up a single trunk, and some whose single root sends up two or more trunks.

Footnote 11:

In this verse, besides displaying the signs of Allah’s Oneness and His power and wisdom, a subtle allusion is also made to another reality — namely, that Allah has nowhere maintained uniformity in this universe. The earth is one, yet its various tracts differ from one another in their colors, shapes, and properties. The earth and the water are one, yet all kinds of grains and fruits are produced from them. A single tree produces fruits which, despite belonging to the same species, differ from one another in shape, size, and other characteristics. A single root sends up two separate trunks, each possessing its own distinct characteristics. Anyone who reflects on these things will never be troubled to see such great diversity found in human natures, temperaments, and dispositions. As stated further on in this very surah, had Allah so willed, He could have made all human beings alike; but the wisdom on which Allah has founded this universe calls not for uniformity but for variety and diversity. Had everyone been made identical, this entire spectacle of existence would have become meaningless.

Footnote 2:

In other words, He established the heavens on supports that are neither felt nor seen. Apparently, there is nothing in the vast expanse of space that is holding up these countless celestial bodies. Yet there exists an imperceptible force that keeps each one fixed in its place and orbit, preventing these massive bodies from falling onto the earth or onto one another.

Footnote 3:

For an explanation of this, see Surah Al-A’raf, footnote 41. A brief indication here will suffice: wherever the Qur’an speaks of Allah’s establishing Himself on the Throne (i.e., the center of command of the universe), the purpose is to convey that Allah has not merely created this universe but is Himself personally ruling over this dominion. This world of existence is not a self-running machine, as many ignorant people imagine, nor is it the battleground of various gods, as many other ignorant people suppose; rather, it is a well-ordered system which its Creator Himself is running.

Footnote 4:

Here it should be kept in mind that the people being addressed were not deniers of Allah’s existence, nor did they deny that He was the Creator, nor did they suppose that all these operations being described here belonged to someone other than Allah. Hence, no need was felt to argue the point that it is indeed Allah Who established the heavens and Who made the sun and moon subservient to a law. Rather, these facts, which the addressees themselves already accepted, have been used as evidence for a different point — namely, that no one besides Allah holds authority in this system of the universe such that he would deserve to be taken as a deity. As for the question of how this argument could be useful against someone who denies the very existence of Allah and His being the Creator and Sustainer, the answer is that the very arguments Allah presents to establish Tawhid against polytheists are also sufficient to establish the existence of God against atheists. The entire argument for Tawhid rests on this foundation: that the whole universe, from the earth to the heavens, is a single complete system, and this entire system operates under one mighty law, in which signs of all-encompassing power, flawless wisdom, and unerring knowledge are visible on every side. These signs indicate, on the one hand, that this system does not have many rulers, and on the other hand, that it does have one ruler. Only a stubborn person, or one whose reason has been overpowered, can conceive of order without an orderer, law without a lawgiver, wisdom without a wise being, knowledge without a knower, and — above all — creation without a Creator.

Footnote 5:

That is, this system does not merely testify to the fact that an all-encompassing power rules over it and that a mighty wisdom is at work within it; rather, all its parts, and all the forces operating within them, also testify that nothing in this system is eternal. Everything has an appointed term until which it continues, and when its term is fulfilled, it perishes. This truth, which holds for each and every part of this system, also holds for the system as a whole. The overall structure of this physical universe indicates that it is not everlasting and eternal; for it too there is certainly an appointed time when it will come to an end and another world will be established in its place. Therefore, the coming of the Resurrection, of which news has been given, is not something improbable — rather, its not coming would be improbable.

Footnote 6:

That is, signs indicating that the realities the Messenger of Allah is announcing are indeed true realities. Evidence testifying to them exists on every side in the universe. If people were to open their eyes and look, they would see that the countless signs spread across the earth and the heavens confirm every single matter that the Qur’an calls upon them to believe in.

Footnote 7:

The testimony borne by the signs of the universe mentioned above — that the Creator and Sustainer of this world is one alone — is quite obvious and manifest. But the fact that the news given by the Messenger of Allah concerning a second life after death, man’s presentation before the Divine court, and reward and punishment, is also true — this too is testified to by the same signs, though it is somewhat less obvious and becomes clear only upon deeper reflection. For this reason, no need was felt to draw special attention to the first reality, since a listener can understand what is proven merely by hearing the arguments. However, the second reality has been specifically drawn attention to — namely, that certainty about meeting your Lord can also be attained by reflecting upon these same signs.

The above-mentioned signs establish the truth of the Hereafter in two ways:

First, when we reflect upon the structure of the heavens and the subjugation of the sun and moon, our hearts bear witness that the God Who created these magnificent celestial bodies, and whose power keeps such enormous spheres revolving in space, would find it in no way difficult to bring mankind back to life after death.

Second, this same celestial system also gives us the testimony that its Creator is supremely wise, and it seems highly improbable, given His wisdom, that after creating mankind as rational, conscious beings possessed of will and authority, and after granting them power over countless things on His earth, He would not call them to account for their life’s conduct — that He would not question the oppressors among them nor redress the wrongs done to the oppressed, that He would not reward the righteous among them nor punish the wrongdoers, and that He would never ask them what they did with the precious trusts He had placed in their care. A blind king may well hand over the affairs of his kingdom to his officials and remain sunk in heedless slumber, but such carelessness and negligence cannot be expected from One Who is Wise and All-Knowing.

Thus, contemplation of the heavens not only convinces us of the possibility of the Hereafter but also gives us certainty of its actual occurrence.

Is it then possible that the person who knows this Book which your Lord has sent down to you to be the truth, and the person who is blind to this reality, could be equal? 35,Only people of understanding take heed 36. And their way is this: they fulfill their covenant with Allah and do not break it after having bound themselves firmly to it 37.

Their conduct is such that they maintain those bonds and relationships which Allah has commanded to be maintained 38; they fear their Lord and dread the possibility of a severe reckoning. Their state is such that they remain steadfast in seeking their Lord’s pleasure,39 establish Prayer, spend out of what We have provided them, both openly and secretly, and repel evil with good 40. For such people is the reward of the Final Abode — everlasting gardens which they will enter, along with the righteous among their forefathers, their spouses, and their offspring. Angels will come to welcome them from every side, saying, “Peace be upon you!41. This is your reward today for the patience you observed” — how excellent is this Final Abode!

As for those who break Allah’s covenant after having bound themselves firmly to it, who sever the bonds that Allah has commanded to be joined, and who spread corruption in the earth — upon them is the curse, and theirs is the most evil abode in the Hereafter.

Allah grants abundant provision to whomever He wills, and gives in due measure to whomever He wills 42. These people are engrossed in the life of this world, whereas the life of this world, compared with the Hereafter, is nothing but a fleeting enjoyment. [Section 3]

Footnote 35:

That is, those who accept this teaching sent by Allah and this call of Allah’s Messenger are not blind of reason, but rather alert, perceptive people who possess understanding. And thereafter their character and conduct in this world take on the color, and their end in the Hereafter takes the form, described in the verses that follow.

That is, neither can their conduct in this world be the same, nor can their end in the Hereafter be the same.

Footnote 36: That is, those who accept this teaching sent by Allah and this call of Allah’s Messenger are not blind of reason, but rather alert, perceptive people who possess understanding. And thereafter their character and conduct in this world take on the color, and their end in the Hereafter takes the form, described in the verses that follow.

Footnote 37:

This refers to that primordial covenant which Allah Almighty took from all mankind at the very beginning of creation, that they would worship Him alone (for an explanation, see Surah Al-A’raf, footnotes 134 and 135). This covenant has been taken from every human being; it lies embedded in everyone’s nature, and it becomes firmly established the moment a person comes into being through Allah’s creation and is nurtured through His providence. Being sustained by Allah’s provision, making use of the things He has created, and employing the faculties He has bestowed, automatically binds a person to a covenant of servitude with God — a covenant which no person of understanding and gratitude can dare to break, except that he may occasionally, and unknowingly, slip into some lapse.

Footnote 38:

That is, all those social and civilizational bonds upon whose soundness the welfare and well-being of man’s collective life depends.

Footnote 39:

That is, they keep their desires under control, bind their emotions and inclinations within limits, do not slip when they see the benefits and pleasures that beckon toward disobeying Allah, and endure the losses and hardships they fear in obeying Allah. In this sense, the believer’s entire life is, in truth, a life of patience, for in hope of Allah’s pleasure and in expectation of the lasting rewards of the Hereafter, he exercises self-restraint in this world and patiently resists every inclination of his soul toward sin.

Footnote 40:

That is, they do not repay evil with evil but with good. They do not confront wrong with wrong but with what is right. However much someone wrongs them, they respond not with wrongdoing but with justice. However much someone lies about them, they respond with truth. However much someone betrays their trust, they respond with honesty. It is in this sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: do not be mere followers of the crowd, saying that if people do good we will do good and if they wrong us we will wrong them; rather, train yourselves so that if people do good you do good, and if they do evil, you do not commit injustice. It is in this same sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that his Lord commanded him with nine things, four of which were: that he should speak justly whether pleased or angry, that he should give the due of one who withholds his due from him, that he should give to one who deprives him, and that he should forgive one who wrongs him. And it is in this sense that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Do not betray one who betrays you.” And it is in this sense that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “The best way to punish one who does not fear God in his dealings with you is to deal with him while fearing God yourself.”

Footnote 41:

This does not merely mean that angels will come from every side to greet them with peace; it also means that the angels will give them the good news that they have now arrived at a place where there is nothing but peace and security for them — where they are now safe from every calamity, every hardship, every toil, and every danger and fear. (For further detail, see Surah Al-Hijr, footnote 29.)

Footnote 42:

The background of this verse is that the disbelievers of Mecca, like ignorant people in general, judged the worth of human beings not by the goodness or badness of their beliefs and deeds, but by their wealth or poverty. They supposed that whoever was enjoying abundant comfort in this world was beloved of God, however misguided and wicked he might be, and that whoever was in straitened circumstances was under God’s displeasure, however righteous he might be. On this basis they gave preference to the chiefs of the Quraysh over the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) poor companions, saying, “Look, and see with whom Allah is.” In response, it is being pointed out that the matter of abundance or scarcity of provision is governed by a wholly different law of Allah’s, under which, for the sake of countless other wise purposes, more is given to some and less to others. This is no criterion by which to judge the moral and spiritual worth of human beings. The true basis of distinction among human beings, and the real criterion of their felicity or wretchedness, is who has adopted the right path of thought and action and who the wrong one, who has acquired good qualities and who bad ones. But foolish people, instead of looking at this, look only at who has received more wealth and who less.

Is He, then, Who watches over every soul, keeping account of all that it earns, ⟨like those who cannot⟩? Yet such is the audacity being shown against Him — that people have set up partners for Him! Say to them, O Prophet, “⟨If they are truly partners you have set up for God,⟩ then name them — who are they? Are you informing Allah of something on His earth that He does not know? Or are you merely uttering hollow words?” The truth is that their scheming has been made to seem fair to those who have refused to accept the call to truth, and they have been barred from the Straight Path. Whomever Allah lets go astray, none can show him guidance

Footnote 50:

That is, He Who is individually aware of the condition of every single person, and from Whose sight neither the goodness of any righteous person nor the evil of any wicked person is hidden.

Footnote 51:

The audacity referred to is this: rivals and counterparts are being set up for Him; His creatures are being made partners in His Being, His attributes, and His rights; and while living within His dominion, people imagine that they can do whatever they please and no one will call them to account.

Footnote 52:

That is, regarding these partners you have set up for Him, only three possibilities exist:

One is that you have received some authoritative information that Allah has declared certain beings to be partners with Him in His attributes, His powers, or His rights. If this is the case, then kindly tell us who these individuals are, and through what channel this information regarding their appointment as partners of God has reached you.

The second possible case is that Allah Himself is unaware that certain persons have become His partners on earth, and you have now set out to inform Him of this. If this is so, then plainly admit your position, and we shall see how many fools in the world remain committed to following this utterly absurd doctrine of yours.

But if neither of these is the case, then only a third possibility remains: that without any authority and without any argument, you simply declare whomever you please to be God’s relative, call whomever you please a benefactor and helper in distress, and claim of whomever you please that he is the ruler of such-and-such a region and that such-and-such affairs are accomplished through his support and assistance.

Footnote 53:

One reason for calling shirk “scheming” or “trickery” is that, in reality, none of those to whom divine attributes and powers have been ascribed — whether celestial bodies, angels, spirits, or eminent human beings — and who have been made partners in God’s exclusive rights, ever themselves claimed such attributes and powers, or demanded such rights, or taught people, “Perform acts of worship before us, and we will look after your affairs.” Rather, this was the doing of shrewd men who, in order to establish their own godhood over the common people and to share in the fruits of their labor, fabricated counterfeit deities, made people believe in them, and then set themselves up in one way or another as the representatives of these deities, using the arrangement to serve their own interests.

The second reason for describing shirk as “scheming” is that it is, in truth, a self-deception — a back door through which man seeks an escape route for the sake of worldly attachment, to evade moral restraints, and to lead an irresponsible life.

The third reason for describing the polytheists’ conduct as “scheming” comes next.

Footnote 54:

It is human nature that when a person chooses one thing over another, he tries, in order to satisfy his own conscience and to convince others of his rectitude, to justify by every possible argument the thing he has chosen, while he begins gathering all sorts of arguments against the thing he has rejected. On this basis it has been stated that when they refused to accept the call to truth, then, in accordance with the law of nature, their error was made to appear attractive to them, along with the scheming needed to persist in that error — and by that same natural law, they were barred from coming onto the Straight Path.

Ask them: Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth? Say: Allah. Then say to them: Since this is the truth, have you taken, besides Him, protectors who have no power even to benefit or harm themselves? Say: Can the blind and the seeing be equal? Or can light and darkness be alike? Or have the partners they have set up with Allah created anything like His creation, so that creation itself has become confused for them? Say: Allah alone is the Creator of everything, and He is the One, the Supreme, the Irresistible!

EXPLANATIRY FOOTNOTES

Footnote 26:

It should be noted that these people themselves believed that Allah is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. They could not answer this question with a denial, since such a denial would itself contradict their own belief. Yet when the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked them, they also shrank from answering in the affirmative, since acknowledging it would necessitate accepting Tawhid, leaving no reasonable basis remaining for shirk. Therefore, sensing the weakness of their position, they would fall silent in response to this question. This is why, at various places in the Qur’an, Allah Almighty tells the Prophet (peace be upon him) to ask them: Who is the Creator of the heavens and the earth? Who is the Lord of the universe? Who provides you with sustenance? He then commands him to answer himself, “Allah,” and thereupon argues: since all these matters belong to Allah, then who, after all, are these others whom you are worshipping?

Footnote 27:

By “the blind” is meant a person before whom the signs and evidences of Allah’s Oneness are spread out on every side in the universe, yet he sees none of them. And by “the seeing” is meant one for whom the registers of knowledge of the Creator lie open in every atom and every leaf of the universe. The meaning of Allah Almighty’s question is: O you who are blind of reason! If you yourselves cannot see, then how could one who possesses sight put out his own eyes? How could it be possible for someone who sees reality plainly before him to go stumbling about like you people devoid of insight?

Footnote 28:

By “light” is meant that light of true knowledge which was granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his followers. And by “darkness” is meant the darkness of ignorance in which the deniers were wandering astray. The meaning of the question is: how can one who has already received light agree to extinguish his own lamp and go stumbling about in darkness? If you do not appreciate the worth of light, so be it. But one who has already attained it, who has come to know the difference between light and darkness, who clearly sees the straight path in the light of day — how could he possibly be willing to abandon that light and wander lost in darkness?

Footnote 29:

The meaning of this question is: had some things in the world been created by Allah and others by someone else, and had it been difficult to determine which was Allah’s creative work and which belonged to others, then indeed there might have been some reasonable basis for shirk. But when these polytheists themselves admit that not one of their deities has created so much as a straw or a single hair, and when they themselves concede that these false gods have not the slightest share in creation, then on what basis have these false deities been made partners in the Creator’s authority and rights?

Footnote 30:

The word actually used is “Qahhar,” meaning “the One Who, by His own power, exercises command over all and holds all in subjection.” The statement that “Allah alone is the Creator of everything” is a reality acknowledged by the polytheists themselves, which they never denied. And the statement that “He is One and Supreme” is the necessary consequence of this acknowledged reality, which no rational person, having accepted the first reality, can possibly deny. For whoever is the Creator of everything is necessarily One and Unique, since everything else is His creation — how, then, could any creature share with its Creator in His Being, His attributes, His powers, or His rights? Likewise, He is necessarily Supreme, since a creature’s being subjected to its creator is inherent in the very concept of createdness. If the Creator did not possess complete dominance, how could He create at all? Thus, for one who acknowledges Allah as Creator, it becomes impossible to deny these two purely rational and logical conclusions, and it becomes altogether unreasonable for anyone to abandon the Creator to worship a creature, or to abandon the Supreme to call upon the subjugated for the removal of difficulties.

Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra. These are the verses of the Divine Book; and what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the very truth, but most people ⟨of your nation⟩ do not believe.

Footnote 1:

This is the preamble of the surah, in which the purpose of the discourse is stated in a few words. The address is directed to the Prophet (peace be upon him), and Allah Almighty says to him: O Prophet, most of your people are refusing to accept this teaching, but the fact is that We have sent it down to you, and this is the truth, whether people believe it or not. After this brief preamble, the main discourse begins, in which an attempt is made to explain to the deniers why this teaching is true and how mistaken their attitude toward it is. To understand this discourse, it is essential to bear in mind from the very outset that what the Prophet (peace be upon him) was inviting people to at that time consisted of three fundamental points. First, that all godhood belongs entirely to Allah, and therefore no one besides Him is deserving of worship and servitude. Second, that after this life there is another life in which you will have to answer for your deeds. Third, that I am Allah’s Messenger, and whatever I am presenting is not from myself but from Allah. These are the three points which people were refusing to accept, and it is these very points that this discourse repeatedly attempts to explain in various ways, and it is regarding these same points that people’s doubts and objections are addressed and removed.

EXPLANATORY FOOT NOTES

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 96

That is, some die before birth, some before reaching youth, and some before reaching old age.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 97

“The appointed time” refers either to the time of death, or to the time when all humans must rise again and stand before their God. In the first sense, the meaning is that Allah carries every human being through the different stages of life to that particular hour which He has fixed for each one’s return — before which time, even if the whole world combined wished to kill someone, it could not, and after which time, even if all the powers of the world combined tried to keep someone alive, they could not succeed. In the second sense, the meaning is that this whole spectacle of existence has not been set up merely so that you should die, turn to dust, and be annihilated — rather, Allah carries you through these various stages of life so that all of you may be brought before Him at the time He has appointed.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 98

That is, you are not carried through these various stages of life merely to live like animals and die like them; rather, you are carried through them so that you may use the reason Allah has granted you, and understand the system through which these events occur even within your own being. The emergence of something as extraordinary as life from the lifeless matter of the earth; then the coming into being of a creature as astonishing as man from a microscopic organism in a drop of sperm; then, from the moment of conception in the mother’s womb until birth, its being nurtured inside in such a way that its sex, its appearance, the structure of its body, the characteristics of its mind, and its faculties and capacities are all determined right there, with no power on earth able to influence their formation; then the fact that whoever is destined to be miscarried is indeed miscarried, whoever is destined to die in childhood dies in childhood, whether he be the child of a king or anyone else, and whoever is destined to reach a certain age of youth or old age reaches that age even after passing through the most dangerous circumstances in which death would seem all but certain, while whoever is destined to die at a particular stage of life dies at that stage even under the care of the best doctors in the finest hospital in the world — do not all these facts point to the reality that the reins of our own life and death lie in the hands of some Absolute Power? And given that this is indeed the fact — that an Absolute Power governs our life and death — how, then, could any prophet, saint, angel, star, or planet ever become deserving of our worship and servitude? Since when has any servant attained such a station that we should pray to him and regard him as having authority over the making and unmaking of our fortune? And how did any human power come to hold the office that we should unquestioningly obey its law, its commands and prohibitions, and its self-invented categories of lawful and unlawful? CHAPTER: 40 EXPLANATORY FOOTNOTES # 82-84

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 82

After the Hereafter, the discourse now turns to the Oneness of God, which was the other major point of contention between the disbelievers and the Prophet (peace be upon him).

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 83

That is, all authority to accept or reject prayers rests with Me alone, so do not ask others for your prayers to be granted, but ask Me instead. To properly grasp the spirit of this verse, three points should be well understood:

First, a person prays only to a being whom he considers to be all-hearing, all-seeing, and possessed of supernatural power, and the real motive behind praying is a person’s inner sense that the natural means and resources available in the world of causes are not, or have proven not to be, sufficient to relieve some hardship or fulfill some need, making it necessary to turn to a being possessed of supernatural authority. He calls out to this being not only aloud but silently, indeed pleading for help within his own heart — and all this is necessarily based on the belief that this being sees him everywhere, in every state, hears even what is in his heart, and possesses such absolute power that, wherever the one who calls upon it may be, it can reach him with help and set right what has gone wrong for him. Once this reality of prayer is understood, it becomes in no way difficult to grasp that a person who calls upon any being other than Allah for help is, in reality, committing outright, pure, and unmistakable polytheism — for he believes that being to possess attributes that belong to Allah alone. Had he not considered that being a partner with Allah in these divine attributes, the very idea of praying to it could never have occurred to him.

The second point that must be well understood in this connection is that a person’s own belief that a certain being possesses such powers does not make it actually possess them. Possessing power is a matter of objective fact, not dependent on anyone’s believing it or not. Whoever truly possesses power will remain in possession of it regardless of whether you consider him to possess it or not; and whoever does not truly possess it will not gain the slightest share of power merely because you have believed him to possess it. Now it is an objective fact that the All-Powerful, the Governor of the universe, the All-Hearing and All-Seeing, is Allah alone, and He alone possesses all power in its totality. There is no other being anywhere in this entire universe that has the authority to hear prayers and act upon them by way of acceptance or rejection. If, contrary to this fact, people take it into their heads to consider certain prophets, saints, angels, jinn, planets, or imaginary deities to share in this power, this will not make the slightest actual difference — the Owner will remain the Owner, and powerless servants will remain servants.

The third point is that praying to anyone other than Allah is exactly like a person writing out a petition and going to a government office, but then, bypassing the actual authority in charge, presenting his petition instead to one of the other petitioners sitting there with their own requests, and then pleading with folded hands, saying, “You are everything, it is you who command here, my wish will be granted only through you.” This act is, in the first place, sheer folly and ignorance in itself — but it becomes utter insolence when the real authority in charge is present right there, and, in his very presence, petitions and pleas are being presented to someone else instead. This ignorance reaches its peak when the very person to whom the petition is being presented repeatedly explains to him, “I am a petitioner just like you; I have no power in my hands; the real authority is right there — present your petition to him” — yet despite this explanation and refusal, the fool keeps insisting, “You are my authority; my work will be accomplished only through you.”

Keeping these three points in mind, one should try to understand Allah’s statement here: call upon Me — it is I who answer your prayers; accepting them is My affair.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 84

Two points in this verse deserve special attention. First, prayer (du’a) and worship (’ibadah) are here expressed with synonymous terms, making clear that prayer is worship — indeed, the very essence of worship. Second, those who do not pray to Allah are described in words meaning that “out of arrogance they turn away from My worship,” showing that praying to Allah is precisely what servitude to Him demands, and that turning away from it means a person is caught up in arrogance, shying away from acknowledging his servitude before his Creator and Master. The Prophet (peace be upon him) explained both these themes clearly in his sayings. Numan ibn Bashir relates that the Prophet said, “Indeed, prayer is worship itself” — then recited this verse (Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, Nasa’i, Ibn Majah, Ibn Abi Hatim, Ibn Jarir). Anas relates that he said, “Prayer is the marrow of worship” (Tirmidhi). Abu Hurairah relates that he said, “Whoever does not ask of Allah, Allah becomes angry with him” (Tirmidhi).

At this point, a difficulty that often troubles many minds also gets resolved. People think about prayer along these lines: since good and bad in destiny lie within Allah’s control, and whatever He has already decreed according to His overriding wisdom and purpose must inevitably come to pass, then what is the point of our praying at all? This is a serious misconception that strips prayer of all its significance in a person’s heart, and if a person prays while caught up in this false notion, his prayer retains no real spirit. The above verse of the Qur’an removes this misconception in two ways. First, Allah states in plain words, “Call upon Me, and I will answer you” — making clear that destiny and decree are not something that, God forbid, have bound even Allah’s own hands the way they bind ours, stripping Him of the power to grant prayers. Servants, of course, have no power to avert or alter Allah’s decisions, but Allah Himself certainly has the power to change His decision upon hearing a servant’s prayers and pleas. The second point stated in this verse is that whether or not a prayer is granted, it is never in any case devoid of benefit — and a very great benefit at that — namely, that by presenting his needs before his Lord and asking of Him, the servant acknowledges His lordship and supremacy and confesses his own servitude and humility. This expression of servitude is itself worship — indeed, the very essence of worship — for whose reward the servant will never go unrewarded, regardless of whether the particular thing he prayed for is granted to him or not.

We find both these themes fully explained in the Prophet’s sayings as well. The following hadiths shed light on the first theme:

Salman al-Farisi relates that the Prophet said, “Nothing averts decree except prayer” (Tirmidhi) — that is, no one has the power to change Allah’s decision, but Allah Himself can change His own decision, and this happens when a servant prays to Him.

Jabir ibn Abdullah relates that the Prophet said, “Whenever a person prays to Allah with a prayer, Allah either grants him what he asked for, or wards off from him an equivalent evil — provided he does not pray for something sinful or for severing family ties” (Tirmidhi). A similar theme appears in another hadith related by Abu Sa’id al-Khudri, in which the Prophet said, “No Muslim offers a prayer that does not involve sin or severing family ties, but Allah grants him one of three things: either He hastens its answer for him in this world, or He stores it up for him as a reward in the Hereafter, or He wards off from him an equivalent evil” (Musnad Ahmad).

Abu Hurairah relates that the Prophet said, “When any of you prays, let him not say, ‘O Allah, forgive me if You wish; have mercy on me if You wish; provide for me if You wish’ — rather, let him ask with certainty, for none can compel Allah” (Bukhari) — that is, when one of you prays, he should not say, “O God, forgive me if You will, have mercy on me if You will, provide for me if You will,” but should ask with firm resolve, saying, “O God, fulfill this particular need of mine.” Another narration from Abu Hurairah has him saying, “Pray to Allah while being certain of a response” (Tirmidhi).

In another narration, Abu Hurairah relates the Prophet’s saying: “A servant’s prayer is answered so long as he does not pray for something sinful or for severing family ties, and so long as he is not hasty.” It was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what is hastiness?” He said, “It is when a person says, ‘I prayed and prayed, but I do not see it being answered,’ and out of this, he grows weary and gives up praying” (Muslim).

The second theme is illuminated by the following hadiths:

Abu Hurairah relates that the Prophet said, “Nothing is more honored by Allah than prayer” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah).

Ibn Mas’ud relates that he said, “Ask Allah of His bounty, for Allah loves to be asked” (Tirmidhi).

Ibn Umar and Mu’adh ibn Jabal relate that the Prophet said, “Prayer is beneficial both against calamities that have already befallen and those that have not yet befallen, so, O servants of Allah, you must pray” (Tirmidhi, Musnad Ahmad).

Anas relates that the Prophet said, “Each of you should ask his Lord for all his needs, even asking Him for the strap of his sandal should it break” (Tirmidhi) — that is, even in matters that a person outwardly feels are within his own control, he should seek Allah’s help before taking any measure, since no measure of ours can succeed in any matter without Allah’s enabling grace and support; and praying before taking action means that the servant is, at all times, acknowledging his own helplessness and Allah’s supremacy.

CHAPTER: 40 EXPLANATORY FOOTNOTE # 1

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 1

This is the preamble of the discourse, through which the listeners are forewarned from the very outset that this speech being presented to them is not the word of any ordinary being, but has been revealed from a God possessing these particular attributes. Several attributes of Allah are then mentioned in succession, each bearing deep relevance to what follows:

First, that He is “Almighty” — that is, dominant over all. Whatever judgment He passes in anyone’s favor is bound to be enforced; no one can contend with Him and win, nor escape His grasp. So if anyone turns away from His command expecting success, or disputes with His messenger hoping to defeat him, this is nothing but his own folly. Such expectations can never be fulfilled.

Second, that He is “All-Knowing” — meaning He does not speak on the basis of conjecture or guesswork but has direct knowledge of everything. Therefore, whatever information He gives about realities beyond sense and perception can only be correct, and not accepting it means a person is willfully pursuing ignorance. Likewise, He knows what constitutes human welfare and which principles, laws, and commands are necessary for it. Every teaching of His is founded on wisdom and true knowledge, in which error is impossible. Hence, rejecting His guidance means a person is deliberately choosing the path of his own destruction. Furthermore, nothing about human conduct is hidden from Him — He even knows the intentions and motives that are the real drivers behind human actions. So no person can escape His punishment through any pretext.

Third, that He is “the Forgiver of sin and Acceptor of repentance.” This is an attribute meant to give hope and encouragement, stated so that those who have persisted in rebellion so far need not despair, but may reconsider their conduct, understanding that if they now desist from it, they can still find a place in Allah’s mercy. It should be understood here that forgiving sin and accepting repentance are not necessarily two names for the same thing — often Allah forgives sins even without repentance. For instance, a person may commit both faults and good deeds, and his good deeds become a means of his faults being forgiven, even if he never had the chance to repent and seek forgiveness for them, or has even forgotten them. Similarly, whatever hardships, calamities, illnesses, and various afflictions of grief and sorrow befall a person in this world all become a substitute for his faults. This is why the forgiving of sins is mentioned separately from the accepting of repentance. But it must be remembered that this concession of forgiveness without repentance is only for the believers — and even among believers, only for those who are free of every trace of rebellion and defiance, and whose sins arose from human weakness rather than from arrogance and persistence in disobedience.

Fourth, that He is “Severe in punishment.” Mentioning this attribute warns people that just as Allah is deeply merciful toward those who choose the path of submission, He is equally severe toward those who adopt an attitude of rebellion and defiance. When a person or group crosses all the limits within which they could be deserving of His overlooking and forgiveness, they then become deserving of His punishment — and His punishment is so terrible that only a foolish person could consider it bearable.

Fifth, that He is “Owner of great bounty” — that is, open-handed, self-sufficient, and generous. A comprehensive shower of His blessings and favors is falling upon all creation at every moment. Whatever His servants receive, they receive only through His grace and generosity.

After these five attributes, two realities are stated in unambiguous terms. One, that in truth there is no god besides Him, however many other false gods people may have set up. The other, that the return of all is to Him alone in the end — no other deity is the one who takes account of people’s deeds and decides their reward and punishment. So whoever sets up others as gods besides Him will himself bear the consequence of his own folly.

CHAPTER: 40 EXPLANATORY FOOTNOTE # 2-5

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 2

“Disputing” here means engaging in crooked argumentation — nitpicking, raising absurd and irrelevant objections, tearing a single word or phrase out of context and building on it all kinds of subtle points to construct edifices of doubt and accusation, ignoring the actual intent of the speech and twisting it to mean something else, so that the person neither understands it himself nor lets others understand it. This style of disagreement is invariably adopted only by those whose opposition is rooted in bad faith. A sincere opponent, even when he argues, does so for the sake of genuine inquiry, engaging with the actual issues under discussion in order to satisfy himself whether his own view or the other party’s is correct. Such argument aims at discovering the truth, not at defeating anyone. In contrast, the real aim of a bad-faith opponent is neither to understand nor to make others understand — he wants to defeat and frustrate the other party, and enters the field of debate simply to prevent the other side’s argument from gaining any ground. For this reason, he never confronts the actual issues but keeps making raids on the periphery.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 3

The word “kufr” is used here in two senses: one, ingratitude for blessings; the other, denial of the truth. In the first sense, this phrase means that only those adopt this attitude toward Allah’s signs who have forgotten His favors and lost all awareness that it is by His blessings alone that they are sustained. In the second sense, it means that only those adopt this attitude who have turned away from the truth and have resolved not to accept it. Keeping the context in view, it becomes quite clear that “those who disbelieve” here does not refer to every person who is not a Muslim. For a non-Muslim who argues in good faith in order to understand Islam, and who, for the sake of inquiry, tries to grasp points he finds difficult, would technically still be termed a disbeliever until he accepts Islam — but it is obvious that the censure in this verse does not apply to such a person.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 4

There is a gap between the first phrase and the second, which has been left for the listener’s mind to fill. The drift of the discourse itself makes it clear that those who adopt a quarrelsome attitude toward Allah’s signs can never escape punishment — sooner or later their downfall must come. Now if you observe that, despite doing all this, such people are strutting about confidently on Allah’s earth, their businesses are thriving, their governments are running in grand style, and they are thoroughly enjoying themselves, do not be deceived into thinking that they have escaped Allah’s grasp, or that warring against Allah’s signs is some game that can be played for entertainment without its players ever having to face a bad outcome. This is, in fact, only a respite granted to them by Allah. The more such people misuse this respite to commit ever greater mischief, the more heavily laden their vessel sinks when it finally goes down.

Surah Al-Mu’min, Footnote No. 5

That is, whatever punishment befell them in this world was not their final penalty; rather, Allah has also decreed for them that they are to end up in Hell. Another possible meaning of this verse is that just as the downfall of past nations has already come to pass, so too, for those who are disbelieving now, this same decree of Allah stands settled: that they are bound for Hell.
