It is Allah alone Who raised the heavens without any such visible supports (2), and then established Himself upon His Throne of authority (3), and Who subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course under a fixed law (4). Everything in this entire system moves on to an appointed term (5), and Allah alone is managing the whole affair. He explains His signs in detail (6), so that you may become certain of meeting your Lord (7).

And He is the One Who spread out this earth, set up mountains in it like pegs, and made rivers flow. He created every kind of fruit in pairs, and He is the One Who causes the night to cover the day (8). Surely in all these things there are great signs for people who reflect.

And behold, in the earth there are separate tracts of land lying adjacent to one another (9). There are vineyards, cultivated fields, and date palms — some growing in clusters and some standing alone (10). All of them are watered by the same water, yet We make some of them excel others in taste. Surely in all these things there are many signs for people who use their reason (11)

Footnote 2:

In other words, He established the heavens on supports that are imperceptible and invisible. Apparently there is nothing in the vast expanse of space that is holding up these countless celestial bodies. Yet there is an unseen power that keeps each one fixed in its position and orbit, preventing these immense bodies from falling onto the earth or onto one another.

Footnote 3:

For an explanation of this, see Surah Al-A’raf, footnote 41. Briefly, it suffices here to point out that wherever the Qur’an mentions Allah’s being seated in majesty upon the Throne (i.e., the center of command over the universe), the purpose stated is that Allah has not merely created this universe but is Himself ruling and governing this kingdom. This world of existence is not a self-running machine, as many ignorant people imagine, nor is it the domain of multiple gods, as many other ignorant people suppose; rather, it is an orderly system which its Creator Himself is running.

Footnote 4:

Here it should be kept in mind that the audience being addressed did not deny Allah’s existence, nor did they deny that He was the Creator, nor did they suppose that the affairs described here belonged to anyone other than Allah. Therefore, no need was felt to argue the point that it is indeed Allah who established the heavens and who has subjected the sun and moon to a fixed law. Rather, these facts, which the addressees themselves accepted, are put forward as evidence for a different point — namely, that besides Allah there is no other holder of authority in this cosmic system who deserves to be worshipped as a deity. As for the question of how this argument could be useful against someone who denies Allah’s existence and His being the Creator and Sustainer altogether — the answer is that the very arguments Allah presents to establish His Oneness against polytheists are also sufficient to establish His existence against atheists. The entire argument for Tawhid rests on the fact that the whole universe, from the earth to the heavens, is one complete system, and this entire system runs under one mighty law, in which everywhere are visible the marks of an all-encompassing authority, flawless wisdom, and unerring knowledge. These signs point, on the one hand, to the fact that this system does not have many rulers, and on the other, that it does have one Ruler. Only a person who is stubbornly obstinate, or one whose reason has been overcome, could conceive of order without an orderer, law without a lawgiver, wisdom without a wise being, knowledge without a knower, and above all, creation without a Creator.

Footnote 5:

That is, this system is not merely testifying that one all-encompassing authority rules over it and that a mighty wisdom is at work within it; rather, all its parts and all the forces working within them also bear witness that nothing in this system is everlasting. Everything has an appointed time until which it runs its course, and when its time is completed, it perishes. This is true of every single component of this system, and it is equally true of the system as a whole. The overall structure of this physical universe indicates that it is not eternal and everlasting; a time is fixed for it too, when it will come to an end and another world will be established in its place. Therefore, the coming of the Last Hour, of which news has been given, is not something improbable — rather, its not coming would be improbable.

Footnote 6:

That is, signs indicating that the realities which the Messenger of Allah is announcing are in fact true realities. Everywhere in the universe there exist traces bearing witness to them. If people were to open their eyes and look, they would see that the countless signs spread across the earth and heavens confirm the very things the Qur’an calls upon them to believe in.

Footnote 7:

The testimony of the cosmic signs mentioned above to the fact that this world has one Creator and Sustainer is quite evident and open. But the fact that these same signs also testify to the truth of what the Messenger of Allah has announced regarding the second life after death, man’s appearance before the divine court, and reward and punishment, is somewhat less obvious and becomes clear only with deeper reflection. That is why there was no need to draw special attention to the first reality, since a listener could grasp what is proved merely by hearing the arguments. The second reality, however, has been specifically highlighted — that certainty of meeting your Lord, too, can be attained by reflecting on these very signs.

The above-mentioned signs establish the truth of the Hereafter in two ways:

First, when we reflect on the structure of the heavens and the subjection of the sun and moon, our hearts bear witness that for the God who created these immense celestial bodies, and whose power keeps such vast spheres revolving in space, it is not at all difficult to bring mankind back to life after death.

Second, this same cosmic system also gives us the testimony that its Creator is supremely wise, and it seems utterly inconceivable, given His wisdom, that after making mankind a rational, conscious creature endowed with will and choice, and after granting them power over countless things on His earth, He would not call them to account for their conduct in life — that He would not question the wrongdoers or redress the wronged, would not reward the righteous or punish the wicked, and would never ask what they did with the precious trusts He placed in their care. A blind king may well hand over the affairs of his kingdom to his officials and remain sunk in heedless slumber, but such carelessness and neglect cannot be expected of one who is wise and knowing.

In this way, the observation of the heavens not only convinces us of the possibility of the Hereafter but also assures us of its certain occurrence.

Footnote 8:

After the celestial bodies, attention is now drawn to the earthly realm, and here too, evidence from the signs of Allah’s power and wisdom is presented for the same two realities (Tawhid and the Hereafter) for which evidence was drawn from the signs of the heavenly realm in the preceding verses. A summary of these arguments is as follows:

(1) The relationship of the earth with the celestial bodies, the relationship of the sun and moon with the earth, and the relationship of the mountains and rivers with the needs of the earth’s countless creatures — all these things bear clear witness that they were neither made by separate gods, nor are they being managed by different powerful deities. Had this been the case, such extensive correspondences, harmonies, and coordinations could never have arisen among all these things, nor could they have continued to persist. How could it have been possible for separate gods to jointly devise such a plan of creation and management for the entire universe, in which every single thing, from the earth to the heavens, remains interconnected with everything else, and in which their respective interests never come into conflict?

(2) The suspension of this magnificent globe of the earth in open space, the rising up of such enormous mountains on its surface, the flowing of such mighty rivers across its breast, the growth of countless varieties of trees in its lap, and the continuous, perfectly regular occurrence of the wondrous phenomena of night and day — all these things bear witness to the power of the God Who created them. To suppose that such an All-Powerful Being cannot give man a new life after death is a mark not of reason and wisdom, but of foolishness and stupidity.

(3) The countless instances of wisdom and purpose found in the structure of the earth, in the formation of mountains upon it, in the arrangement by which rivers flow down from the mountains, in the production of every kind of fruit in pairs, and in the regular succession of day after night and night after day — all these loudly proclaim that the God Who devised this plan of creation is supremely wise. All these things declare that this is neither the work of some purposeless force nor the plaything of some frivolous being. In each and every one of these things, the wisdom of a Wise Being — indeed, the most mature wisdom — can be seen at work. After observing all this, only a foolish person could imagine that, having created man on earth and given him such opportunities for great undertakings, He would simply let him vanish into dust for nothing.

Footnote 9:

That is, He has not made the entire earth uniform; rather, He has created within it countless regions which, despite being contiguous, differ completely from one another in shape, color, composition, properties, powers and capacities, and in their produce and mineral or chemical resources. The creation of these different regions, and the presence within them of all kinds of variations, contains within itself countless instances of wisdom and purpose. Setting aside other creatures and considering only the interests of man, one can appreciate that the correspondences and compatibilities found between man’s various needs and purposes on the one hand, and the diversity of these regions of the earth on the other — and the opportunities this has afforded for human civilization to flourish — are undoubtedly the result of the thought, the deliberate planning, and the wise intention of a Wise Being. Great stubbornness is required to dismiss this as a mere accidental occurrence.

Footnote 10:

Among date palms, there are some whose root sends up a single trunk, and some whose single root sends up two or more trunks.

Footnote 11:

In this verse, besides displaying the signs of Allah’s Oneness and His power and wisdom, a subtle allusion is also made to another reality — namely, that Allah has nowhere maintained uniformity in this universe. The earth is one, yet its various tracts differ from one another in their colors, shapes, and properties. The earth and the water are one, yet all kinds of grains and fruits are produced from them. A single tree produces fruits which, despite belonging to the same species, differ from one another in shape, size, and other characteristics. A single root sends up two separate trunks, each possessing its own distinct characteristics. Anyone who reflects on these things will never be troubled to see such great diversity found in human natures, temperaments, and dispositions. As stated further on in this very surah, had Allah so willed, He could have made all human beings alike; but the wisdom on which Allah has founded this universe calls not for uniformity but for variety and diversity. Had everyone been made identical, this entire spectacle of existence would have become meaningless.
