SUMMARY OF THE THEME OF VERSES

74:32–37 — The Oaths and the Warning
The passage opens with a striking rhetorical device: Allah swears by the moon, the retreating night, and the brightening dawn — phenomena of breathtaking regularity and grandeur — to vouch for the reality of Hell. Mawdudi’s insight here is philosophically sharp: familiarity breeds dismissal. The Makkans mocked Hell as impossible, yet they accepted the moon and the alternation of night and day without wonder — not because these are less miraculous, but simply because habit had dulled their perception.
The deeper argument embedded here is one of epistemic consistency: if you already live in a world containing the moon, the rotating earth, the ordered cosmos — you have no rational basis to declare Hell “impossible.” The astonishing is already all around you; you have simply stopped seeing it.
The closing verses then deliver a sober declaration of human freedom within divine sovereignty: the warning has been given, the path made clear. Go forward or stay behind — the choice is yours. This balance between divine warning and human responsibility is a recurring Quranic motif, and it appears here with particular elegance at the close of the oath sequence.

“Nay! By the moon, and by the night as it retreats, and by the dawn as it brightens — indeed, it (Hell) is one of the greatest things, a warning to mankind — to whoever among you wishes to go forward or to stay behind.”

Urdu Translation (rendered in English)
“Never so!² By the moon, and by the night as it turns back, and by the morning as it grows bright — this Hell is also one of the great things, a warning for mankind — a warning for every one of you who wishes to go forward or to stay behind.”

Just as the moon, the night, and the day are among the great signs of Allah’s power, so too is Hell one of the great manifestations of that power. If the existence of the moon was not impossible, and if the regular alternation of night and day was not impossible, then why, in your estimation, has the existence of Hell become impossible?
You feel no wonder at these things only because you see them day and night — otherwise, in their own essence, these too are utterly astonishing miracles of Allah’s power. Had you never observed them, and someone were to inform you that there exists something like the moon, or that there is a sun whose setting plunges the world into darkness and whose rising floods it with light — people like you would have laughed at such a report just as you now laugh upon hearing mention of Hell.
