Historical impacts of Quranic principles & practices
This verse carries two meanings, and major commentators have stated both:
The first meaning is that they will soon see with their own eyes that the call of this Qur’an has spread over all the surrounding lands, and that they themselves have been brought low before it. At that point they will realize that what is being told to them today, and which they refuse to accept, was the plain truth. Some have objected to this interpretation, saying that a message merely gaining dominance and conquering vast territories is not, by itself, proof of its truth—false causes also spread and their followers also go on conquering land after land. But this is a superficial objection made without considering the whole matter. The astonishing conquests granted to Islam in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Rightly-Guided Caliphs were signs of God not merely in the sense that believers conquered territory after territory, but in this sense: that this conquest of nations was unlike other conquests in the world, which merely make one man, one family, or one people the master of others’ lives and property, filling God’s earth with oppression. On the contrary, this conquest brought in its wake a tremendous religious, moral, intellectual, cultural, political, and economic revolution, whose effects, wherever they reached, brought out the best qualities in human beings and suppressed the worst. Virtues that the world expected to find only in world-renouncing ascetics and hermits secluded in worship, and could never imagine finding among those engaged in worldly affairs, this revolution displayed in the governance of rulers, the justice of judges, the wars and conquests of generals commanding armies, the administration of tax collectors, and the commerce of great merchants. Within the society it produced, it raised ordinary people so high in morals, character, and cleanliness that even the elite of other societies came to appear inferior by comparison. It pulled humanity out of the cycle of superstition and myth and set it upon the clear highway of rational inquiry and sound thought and action. It cured social ills that other systems had not even conceived of addressing, or had failed to cure even when they tried—such as discrimination among people on the basis of race, homeland, or language; class division within a single society and the resulting distinctions of high and low and untouchability; the absence of equality between legal rights and actual social practice; the degradation of women and their deprivation of even basic rights; widespread crime; the common prevalence of alcohol and intoxicants; government being above criticism and accountability; the common people being deprived of even basic human rights; disregard for treaties in international relations; savagery in war; and other such ills. Above all, within the Arabian peninsula itself, this revolution visibly replaced anarchy with order, bloodshed and lawlessness with peace, vice and immorality with piety and purity, oppression and injustice with justice, filth and coarseness with cleanliness and refinement, ignorance with knowledge, and generations-old feuds with brotherhood and love—and it made a people who could not even dream of anything beyond the chieftaincy of their own tribe into the leaders of the world. These were the signs that this very generation saw with its own eyes—the generation to whom the Prophet (peace be upon him) first recited this verse. And from that time to this day, God has continued to display these signs without interruption. Even in their periods of decline, Muslims have shown a standard of moral conduct that those who fashion themselves as standard-bearers of civilization and refinement have never come close to matching. There is no parallel anywhere in Muslim history for the cruelty that European nations inflicted upon subjugated peoples in Africa, the Americas, Asia, and within Europe itself. It is the blessing of the Qur’an alone that has instilled such humanity in Muslims that, even after gaining power, they never became tyrants to the degree that non-Muslims have been found to be tyrants in every era of history, down to the present day. Anyone with eyes can see for himself how Christians were treated during the centuries of Muslim rule in Spain, and how Muslims were then treated once Christians gained the upper hand there; how Muslims treated Hindus during their eight-hundred-year rule in India, and how Hindus are treating Muslims now that they hold power; and what the conduct of Muslims toward Jews has been over the past thirteen hundred years, compared to how Muslims are being treated in Palestine today.
The second meaning of this verse is that God will show people signs, both in the horizons of the earth and sky and within their own selves, through which it will become clear to them that the teaching given by this Qur’an is indeed the truth. Some have objected to this interpretation as well, saying that people were already looking at the horizons of earth and sky and at their own selves even then—so what does it mean to say that signs would be shown within these things in the future? But this objection is just as superficial as the objection to the first interpretation. The horizons of earth and sky are, without doubt, the very same ones that mankind has always beheld, and man’s own being is likewise the same as it has always been in every age—but the signs of God contained within these things are so countless that man has never been able to encompass them, nor will he ever be able to. In every age, new signs have kept appearing before mankind, and they will continue to appear until the Day of Judgment.
