9. There is a difference of opinion among the commentators regarding the meaning of “zakah” here. Ibn Abbas and his eminent students Ikrimah and Mujahid say that at this point, zakah refers to the purity of the soul that is achieved through belief in Tawhid (the Oneness of God) and obedience to Allah. According to this interpretation, the verse would translate as: destruction is for those polytheists who do not adopt purity. The second group, which includes commentators such as Qatadah, Suddi, Hasan al-Basri, Dahhak, Muqatil, and Ibn al-Sa’ib, take the word here also to mean zakah of wealth. According to this interpretation, the meaning of the verse is: destruction is for those who, by committing shirk, deny God His due, and by not giving zakah, deny His servants their due.

10. In the original, the words “ajrun ghayru mamnoon” are used, which have two further meanings. One is that it will be such a reward that will never diminish. The other is that this reward will not be given while constantly reminding (the recipient) of the favor, the way a miser’s gift is — that if he forces himself to give something to someone, he keeps reminding them of it again and again.
