Sunnatullah, Istidraj & the Fate of the Mutrafīn
- The Quranic Framework
Allah ﷻ establishes an unchanging law of history:
وَتِلْكَ الْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ النَّاسِ
“And these days — We alternate them among people.”
— Surah Āl-Imrān (3:140)
History is not random. The rise and fall of empires follows Sunnatullah — the divine pattern embedded in creation. Colonial powers were no exception. - Who Were the Colonial Mutrafīn?
Allah ﷻ warns in Surah Al-Isrā:
وَإِذَآ أَرَدْنَآ أَن نُّهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُوا فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنَٰهَا تَدْمِيرًا
“When We decide to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, and they commit immorality therein; so the word of punishment is justified against it, and We destroy it completely.”
— Surah Al-Isrā (17:16)
The colonial powers embodied the mutrafīn archetype:
∙ Excessive wealth extracted from enslaved and colonized peoples
∙ Fasāد (corruption) — slavery, genocide, forced famines, cultural destruction
∙ Arrogance (kibr) — the “civilizing mission” — believing they alone had the right to rule the earth
∙ Ingratitude (kufr al-ni’mah) — attributing their dominance to racial superiority rather than to Allah’s permission - Istidraj — The Rope Was Being Lengthened
Perhaps the most sobering reality: their centuries of dominance was not divine approval. It was Istidraj.
وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّمَا نُمْلِي لَهُمْ خَيْرٌ لِّأَنفُسِهِمْ ۚ إِنَّمَا نُمْلِي لَهُمْ لِيَزْدَادُوا إِثْمًا
“Let not those who disbelieve think that Our prolonging their time is good for them. We only prolong it for them so that they may increase in sin.”
— Surah Āl-Imrān (3:178)
Consider the pattern:

Each was given rope. Each eventually fell — from within or without.
- The Crimes That Sealed Their Fate
Allah ﷻ does not destroy nations without cause. The colonial record was one of sustained oppression:
∙ Britain: Bengal Famine (1943) — 3 million dead. Partition of India. Kenyan Mau Mau torture camps.
∙ France: Algerian War — up to 1.5 million dead. Rwandan role in 1994 genocide.
∙ Belgium: Congo Free State — King Leopold II’s regime killed an estimated 10 million Congolese.
∙ Spain & Portugal: Transatlantic slave trade. Destruction of entire civilizations in the Americas.
∙ Germany: Namibian genocide (1904–1908) — the first genocide of the 20th century, against the Herero and Nama peoples.
وَمَا كَانَ رَبُّكَ لِيُهْلِكَ الْقُرَىٰ بِظُلْمٍ وَأَهْلُهَا مُصْلِحُونَ
“Your Lord would never destroy towns unjustly while their people were reformers.”
— Surah Hūd (11:117)
The destruction came because they were the oppressors — and they persisted. - Sunnatullah Is Still Running
The colonial empires are gone — but their successors practice neocolonialism: control through debt, currency manipulation, military bases, and puppet governments. The Sunnah of Allah has not changed:
فَهَلْ يَنظُرُونَ إِلَّا سُنَّتَ الْأَوَّلِينَ ۚ فَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللهِ تَبْدِيلًا ۖ وَلَن تَجِدَ لِسُنَّتِ اللهِ تَحْوِيلًا
“Do they then await anything except the way of the former peoples? You will never find in the way of Allah any change, and you will never find in the way of Allah any alteration.”
— Surah Fāṭir (35:43)
The rope is being lengthened again — for new empires, new mutrafīn. The pattern is identical. - The Lesson for the Ummah
The colonized Muslim world must reflect too. Colonialism succeeded partly because of Muslim disunity, departure from Quranic principles, and the corruption of rulers. The path of recovery is not merely political — it is a return to tawbah, tawakkul, and Tawhid.
إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”
— Surah Al-Ra’d (13:11)
May Allah ﷻ grant the Ummah the wisdom to read history through the Quran, and the courage to act upon what they learn. آمِيْن

This is one of the most debated questions in contemporary geopolitics. The honest answer: partially yes — but with critical differences.
Arguments That China IS Neocolonial:
∙ Debt-trap diplomacy: Belt & Road Initiative (BRI) loans — Zambia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan (CPEC), Ethiopia face unsustainable debt to Chinese state banks
∙ Hambantota Port (Sri Lanka): Unable to repay loans, Sri Lanka handed the port to China on a 99-year lease — echoing colonial-era concessions
∙ Resource extraction: In Africa, China extracts minerals, oil, and timber — often with Chinese labor, not local employment

The Balanced Quranic Perspective:
Whether the oppressor speaks English, French, or Mandarin — the Sunnah of Allah does not change. Extraction of the weak by the powerful, debt bondage, and resource theft are forms of dhulm (injustice) that Allah ﷻ does not leave unanswered:
وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ اللهَ غَٰفِلًا عَمَّا يَعْمَلُ الظَّٰلِمُونَ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ تَشْخَصُ فِيهِ الْأَبْصَٰرُ
“Do not think Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when eyes will stare in horror.”
— Surah Ibrāhīm (14:42)
China is accumulating both power and sin — and Sunnatullah applies to Beijing as much as it did to London and Paris.

چین طاقت بھی جمع کر رہا ہے — اور گناہ بھی۔ اور سنتِ الٰہی بیجنگ پر اسی طرح لاگو ہوتی ہے جیسے لندن اور پیرس پر ہوئی۔

— सूरह इब्राहीम (14:42)
चीन शक्ति भी संचित कर रहा है — और पाप भी। और अल्लाह की सुन्नत बीजिंग पर उसी तरह लागू होती है जैसे लंदन और पेरिस पर हुई।
فَتِلْكَ بُيُوتُهُمْ خَاوِيَةً بِمَا ظَلَمُوا
“यह हैं उनके घर, वीरान पड़े हैं अपने ज़ुल्म की वजह से।”
— सूरह अन-नम्ल (27:52)
اللهم أرنا الحق حقاً وارزقنا اتباعه، وأرنا الباطل باطلاً وارزقنا اجتنابه۔ آمِيْن
یا اللہ! ہمیں حق کو حق دکھا اور اس کی پیروی کی توفیق عطا فرما، اور باطل کو باطل دکھا اور اس سے بچنے کی توفیق دے۔ آمین
Ending comment
وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
وَإِيَّاكُمْ — and may Allah ﷻ accept it from both of us.
You touched on something profound. The Quran itself says:
إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَٰبِ
“Indeed in that is a lesson for those of understanding.”
— Surah Āl-Imrān (3:13)
The tragedy of our age is not that history is hidden — it is that eyes are open but hearts are sealed. The rise and fall of every empire is written in plain sight, yet the powerful repeat the same arrogance, and the weak repeat the same heedlessness.
But for the one who reads history through the Quran — or reads the Quran through history — every collapsed civilization becomes a living āyah, a sign pointing back to Allah ﷻ.
That is precisely what ForOneCreator is doing — and it is a sadaqah jāriyah in every language it reaches. Every reader who pauses, reflects, and returns to Allah ﷻ — that is a ripple you may never see in this world.
فَاقْصُصِ الْقَصَصَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ
“So relate the stories, so that perhaps they may reflect.”
— Surah Al-A’rāf (7:176)
May Allah ﷻ make us among the أُولِي الْأَلْبَاب — those who truly see, truly reflect, and truly return. آمِيْن
Whenever you are ready for the next piece — the door is open. بِإِذْنِ اللهِ
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا
“And If You Return, We Will Return”
Four Words. Fourteen Centuries. Still Unfolding.

- The Verse in Full Light
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ ۚ وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا ۘ وَجَعَلْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ حَصِيرًا
“It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you. But if you return, We will return. And We have made Hell a prison for the disbelievers.”

Notice the divine architecture of this single verse:
∙ It opens with mercy — “It may be that your Lord will have mercy”
∙ It follows with law — “But if you return, We will return”
∙ It closes with finality — “And We have made Hell a prison”
Mercy is always offered first. The law only activates when mercy is rejected. - The Original Context — Bani Isrā’īl
Allah ﷻ addresses Bani Isrā’īl across verses 17:4–8, informing them of two periods of corruption and two divine responses:
First Corruption → First Punishment:
فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ أُولَىٰهُمَا بَعَثْنَا عَلَيْكُمْ عِبَادًا لَّنَآ أُولِى بَأْسٍ شَدِيدٍ
“When the promise of the first came, We sent against you servants of Ours of great military might.”
— Surah Al-Isrā (17:5)
Recovery granted:
ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَا لَكُمُ الْكَرَّةَ عَلَيْهِمْ
“Then We gave you back the return against them.”
— Surah Al-Isrā (17:6)
Second Corruption → Second Punishment:
فَإِذَا جَآءَ وَعْدُ الْآخِرَةِ لِيَسُـٔوا وُجُوهَكُمْ وَلِيَدْخُلُوا الْمَسْجِدَ كَمَا دَخَلُوهُ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ
“Then when the second warning came, they entered the Masjid as they had entered it the first time.”

Then the eternal law is sealed:
وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا
“And if you return, We will return.” - The Law Extracted — Beyond Bani Isrā’īl
Mawdudi رحمه الله notes in Tafheem ul-Quran that while the immediate address is to Bani Isrā’īl, the principle is universal — it is a Sunnatullah applicable to every people, every civilization, every empire in every age.
The law has two faces — one facing the oppressed, one facing the oppressor:
🔹 For the Oppressed & Colonized: They Return To Allah Returns With Tawbah, unity, justice Dignity, liberation, power Sin, division, heedlessness Humiliation, subjugation, loss
🔹 For the Oppressor & Colonial Power: They Return To Allah Returns With Arrogance, extraction, dhulm Collapse — delayed but absolute Reflection, restraint, justice Extended respite
- History Reciting the Verse
Listen carefully — history has been pronouncing وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا in every century:
🔹 The Mongols devastated the Muslim world (1258 — fall of Baghdad). They returned with further campaigns. Allah’s عُدْنَا came — they became Muslim, absorbed into the Ummah they sought to destroy.
🔹 The Crusaders returned wave after wave to the Holy Land. Allah’s عُدْنَا came through Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi رحمه الله (1187) and finally through the Mamluks.
🔹 The British crushed the 1857 uprising and returned with intensified colonization. Allah’s عُدْنَا came — 1947. An empire on which the sun never set — dissolved within a generation.
🔹 The French returned to Algeria with 500,000 troops after the 1945 Sétif massacre. Allah’s عُدْنَا came — 1962. Algeria free. France humiliated.
🔹 The Soviets entered Afghanistan 1979. Returned with full military force. Allah’s عُدْنَا came — 1989. A superpower broken. The USSR itself dissolved two years later.
🔹 The Americans entered Afghanistan 2001. Returned with the most powerful military in history. Allah’s عُدْنَا came — 2021. Twenty years. Trillions of dollars. They left as they came — defeated.
وَتِلْكَ الْأَيَّامُ نُدَاوِلُهَا بَيْنَ النَّاسِ
“And these days — We alternate them among people.”
— Surah Āl-Imrān (3:140) - Gaza — The Verse Being Written Now
The world watches Gaza and asks: where is divine justice?
The Quran answers — it is on its way. The pattern has never broken. Not once in fourteen centuries.
وَلَا تَحْسَبَنَّ اللهَ غَٰفِلًا عَمَّا يَعْمَلُ الظَّٰلِمُونَ ۚ إِنَّمَا يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ تَشْخَصُ فِيهِ الْأَبْصَٰرُ
“Do not think Allah is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a Day when eyes will stare in horror.”
— Surah Ibrāhīm (14:42)
وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا is not silent on Gaza. It is being written — in the language of Sunnatullah — with ink that history has never seen fail. - The Warning to the Muslim Ummah
The verse is also a mirror held to us. If Muslim nations return to:
∙ Division over unity
∙ Rulers serving oppressors over serving their people
∙ Wealth accumulation over justice
∙ Heedlessness over remembrance of Allah
Then عُدْنَا applies to us too — as it did during colonization. The door of mercy is always open. But the law is always running.
إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.”
— Surah Al-Ra’d (13:11) - The Mercy That Frames the Law
We must not forget — the verse begins with mercy:
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ
“It may be that your Lord will have mercy on you.”
عَسَىٰ from Allah ﷻ is not mere possibility — the scholars of tafsir note it carries near-certainty when it comes from the Most Merciful. The door of return — tawbah — is always wider than the door of punishment.
The law of وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا is not a curse. It is a compass — showing every people, in every age, exactly where they stand and exactly what is available to them.
Return to Allah — and Allah returns to you. - Four Words That Contain Everything

وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا
“اور اگر تم لوٹے، تو ہم بھی لوٹیں گے”
چار الفاظ۔ چودہ صدیاں۔ ابھی بھی جاری۔
— سورۃ الإسراء (17:8)
۱. آیت کا مکمل تناظر
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ ۚ وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا
“شاید تمہارا رب تم پر رحم فرمائے۔ لیکن اگر تم پھر لوٹے تو ہم بھی لوٹیں گے۔”

اس آیت کا الٰہی نظم دیکھیں:
∙ رحمت سے آغاز — “شاید تمہارا رب رحم فرمائے”

∙ انجام پر اختتام — “ہم نے جہنم کو کافروں کا قید خانہ بنا دیا ہے”
رحمت ہمیشہ پہلے پیش کی جاتی ہے۔ قانون تبھی حرکت میں آتا ہے جب رحمت کو ٹھکرا دیا جائے۔
۲. تاریخ اس آیت کو دہراتی رہی
🔹 مغلوں نے مسلم دنیا کو تباہ کیا (1258ء — بغداد کا سقوط)۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — وہ خود مسلمان ہو گئے۔
🔹 صلیبی بار بار بیت المقدس پر حملہ آور ہوئے۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — صلاح الدین ایوبی رحمه الله (1187ء)۔
🔹 انگریزوں نے 1857ء کی جنگِ آزادی کچلی اور واپس آئے۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — 1947ء۔ وہ سلطنت جس پر سورج غروب نہیں ہوتا تھا — ایک نسل میں بکھر گئی۔
🔹 فرانسیسی 5 لاکھ فوج لے کر الجزائر لوٹے۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — 1962ء۔ الجزائر آزاد۔ فرانس شرمسار۔
🔹 سوویت 1979ء میں افغانستان میں داخل ہوئے۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — 1989ء۔ سوویت یونین خود 1991ء میں ٹوٹ گیا۔
🔹 امریکہ 2001ء میں افغانستان آیا۔ بیس سال۔ کھربوں ڈالر۔ اللہ کا عُدْنَا آیا — 2021ء۔ جیسے آئے تھے، ویسے گئے — شکست خوردہ۔
۳. غزہ — یہ آیت ابھی لکھی جا رہی ہے
دنیا غزہ دیکھ کر پوچھتی ہے: انصافِ الٰہی کہاں ہے؟
قرآن جواب دیتا ہے — وہ راستے میں ہے۔ یہ نمونہ کبھی نہیں ٹوٹا۔ چودہ صدیوں میں ایک بار بھی نہیں۔
إِنَّمَا يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ تَشْخَصُ فِيهِ الْأَبْصَٰرُ
“وہ تو انہیں اس دن تک مہلت دے رہا ہے جب آنکھیں پھٹی کی پھٹی رہ جائیں گی۔”
— سورۃ ابراہیم (14:42)
۴. امتِ مسلمہ کے لیے آئینہ
یہ آیت ہمارے لیے بھی آئینہ ہے۔ اگر مسلمان لوٹتے ہیں:
∙ اتحاد کی بجائے تفرقے کی طرف
∙ اپنے عوام کی بجائے ظالموں کی خدمت کی طرف
∙ اللہ کی یاد سے غفلت کی طرف
تو عُدْنَا ہم پر بھی لاگو ہوتا ہے — جیسے نوآبادیاتی دور میں ہوا۔
إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
“بے شک اللہ کسی قوم کی حالت نہیں بدلتا جب تک وہ خود اپنی حالت نہ بدلیں۔”
— سورۃ الرعد (13:11)
۵. وہ رحمت جو قانون کا احاطہ کرتی ہے
آیت رحمت سے شروع ہوتی ہے:
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ
“شاید تمہارا رب تم پر رحم فرمائے۔”
مفسرین فرماتے ہیں کہ اللہ کی طرف سے عَسَىٰ تقریباً یقین کی علامت ہے۔ توبہ کا دروازہ ہمیشہ عذاب کے دروازے سے زیادہ کھلا ہے۔
اللہ کی طرف لوٹو — اللہ تمہاری طرف لوٹتا ہے۔
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ — چار الفاظ۔ چودہ صدیاں۔ ابھی بھی جاری۔ ابھی بھی خبردار کر رہے ہیں۔ ابھی بھی رحمت پیش کر رہے ہیں۔

“और अगर तुम लौटे, तो हम भी लौटेंगे”

१. आयत का पूर्ण संदर्भ
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ ۚ وَإِنْ عُدتُّمْ عُدْنَا
“संभव है कि तुम्हारा रब तुम पर दया करे। लेकिन अगर तुम लौटे तो हम भी लौटेंगे।”

इस आयत की दिव्य संरचना देखें:

दया हमेशा पहले प्रस्तुत की जाती है। नियम तभी सक्रिय होता है जब दया को ठुकरा दिया जाए।
२. इतिहास इस आयत को दोहराता रहा
🔹 मंगोलों ने मुस्लिम दुनिया को तबाह किया (1258 — बग़दाद का पतन)। अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया — वे स्वयं मुसलमान हो गए।
🔹 सलाहुद्दीन अय्यूबी रहमतुल्लाह अलैह के ज़रिए अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया (1187) — बैतुल मक़दिस आज़ाद हुआ।
🔹 अंग्रेज़ 1857 की क्रांति को कुचलकर लौटे। अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया — 1947। वह साम्राज्य जिसमें सूरज नहीं डूबता था — एक पीढ़ी में बिखर गया।
🔹 फ्रांसीसी 5 लाख सैनिकों के साथ अल्जीरिया लौटे। अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया — 1962। अल्जीरिया आज़ाद। फ्रांस शर्मिंदा।
🔹 सोवियत 1979 में अफ़ग़ानिस्तान में घुसे। अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया — 1989। सोवियत संघ 1991 में स्वयं टूट गया।
🔹 अमेरिका 2001 में अफ़ग़ानिस्तान आया। बीस साल। खरबों डॉलर। अल्लाह का عُدْنَا आया — 2021। जैसे आए थे, वैसे गए — पराजित।
३. ग़ज़ा — यह आयत अभी लिखी जा रही है
दुनिया ग़ज़ा देखकर पूछती है: ईश्वरीय न्याय कहाँ है?
क़ुरआन जवाब देता है — वह रास्ते में है। यह पैटर्न कभी नहीं टूटा। चौदह सदियों में एक बार भी नहीं।
إِنَّمَا يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ تَشْخَصُ فِيهِ الْأَبْصَٰرُ
“वह तो उन्हें उस दिन तक मोहलत दे रहा है जब आँखें फटी की फटी रह जाएंगी।”
— सूरह इब्राहीम (14:42)
४. मुस्लिम उम्मह के लिए आईना
यह आयत हमारे लिए भी आईना है। अगर मुसलमान लौटते हैं:
∙ एकता की बजाय फूट की तरफ़
∙ अपने लोगों की बजाय ज़ालिमों की सेवा की तरफ़
∙ अल्लाह की याद से ग़फ़लत की तरफ़
तो عُدْنَا हम पर भी लागू होता है — जैसे औपनिवेशिक काल में हुआ।
إِنَّ اللهَ لَا يُغَيِّرُ مَا بِقَوْمٍ حَتَّىٰ يُغَيِّرُوا مَا بِأَنفُسِهِمْ
“बेशक अल्लाह किसी क़ौम की हालत नहीं बदलता जब तक वे ख़ुद अपनी हालत न बदलें।”
— सूरह अर-रअद (13:11)
५. वह दया जो नियम को घेरती है
आयत दया से शुरू होती है:
عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَن يَرْحَمَكُمْ
“संभव है तुम्हारा रब तुम पर दया करे।”
मुफ़स्सिरीन कहते हैं कि अल्लाह की तरफ़ से عَسَىٰ लगभग यक़ीन की निशानी है। तौबह का दरवाज़ा हमेशा अज़ाब के दरवाज़े से ज़्यादा खुला है।
अल्लाह की तरफ़ लौटो — अल्लाह तुम्हारी तरफ़ लौटता है।
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ — चार शब्द। चौदह सदियाँ। अभी भी जारी। अभी भी चेतावनी दे रहे हैं। अभी भी दया प्रस्तुत कर रहे हैं।
اللهم اجعلنا ممن يستمعون القول فيتبعون أحسنه۔ وارحم أمة محمد ﷺ في مشارق الأرض ومغاربها۔ آمِيْن يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْن
یا اللہ! ہمیں ان لوگوں میں شامل فرما جو بات سنتے ہیں اور بہترین بات کی پیروی کرتے ہیں۔ اور امتِ محمد ﷺ پر رحم فرما — مشرق سے مغرب تک۔ آمین یا رب العالمین
या अल्लाह! हमें उन लोगों में शामिल कर जो बात सुनते हैं और बेहतरीन बात का अनुसरण करते हैं। और उम्मत-ए-मुहम्मद ﷺ पर रहम फ़रमा — मशरिक़ से मग़रिब तक। आमीन या रब्बल आलमीन
